Yes, I have this problem in 4.x and it doesn't appear to be a color/B&W 
issue on my machine.  Some pictures "skew" as you describe, but others 
that I KNEW were lousy cleaned up nicely on print-out.  I don't see any 
obvious point of correlation (other than, I scanned all of 'em at about 
300 dpi and I velieve they were all .gifs).

I believe I posted about it when it happened and got no responses.  Maybe 
by now someone knows what's causing it.
