Don't delete those "funky" characters at the beginning of the GEDCOM file.  They are important.

I'm running 5.0 and so far no problems.  I've added and edited, even 
did a GEDCOM extract of some individuals.  I brought the GEDCOM 
up in Notepad to see what it looked like and it had some funky 
characters in front of everything but after I deleted that it looked just 
like a regular GEDCOM file.

I'm going to go home tonight and try to print some reports.  I don't 
believe I've tried to do that yet.
