[PAF] Enhancements to PAF 4.0.x

Friends:
About 55 bugs have been fixed in PAF releases since PAF 4.0 was first
made public. It is late and I do not feel like retyping the content of
those bug fixes. If you want the same information in a the WordPerfect
file, contact me at rhaldy@juno.com. The following enhancements were
made:

	PAF 4 Version Log
4.0.1.0, released 6/28/1999

	 	First publicly available release.

4.0.2.31, released 9/7/1999

	Enhancements:

An electronic manual for PAF is now available.
When merging duplicate sources, duplicate citations on individuals and
marriages will also be merged.
PAF will check the system date for validity. This will warn you if
your system clock is not correct and will detect the case where your
clock does not correctly roll over in the year 2000. No other known year
2000 issues remain in PAF 4.
Numerous changes and improvements to the help file and Getting Started
guide.
Adding a spouse brings up the marriage record automatically after
entering the spouse's information.
Several additional characters can be entered in notes, names, and
places, including the British pound symbol (£) and the copyright symbol
(©).
Setup creates an icon for the Getting Started guide. The guide is
also available from the Help menu.
A preference setting is available to allow editing of Ancestral File
Numbers.
You can search and replace on multimedia file names. This allows you
to change the location of your multimedia file names without having to
edit each multimedia item individually.
You can search and replace places in all individual or marriage
events.
In the individual and marriage edit dialogs you can use the up and
down arrow keys and the Page Up and Page Down keys to move between
fields.
Several vendors do not properly create notes in a GEDCOM file. This
includes Family Tree Maker, Family Origins and Legacy. We now fix the
missing spaces in notes when importing GEDCOM files created by these
programs so that words are not run together.
In the Check/Repair option, additional checks have been added for
endless loops in user event chains (both individual and marriage events)
and endless loops in children chains.
	 	Place sorted list.
	 	Individuals with notes list.
F7 Character map now displays the foreign language characters that can
be added.
When exporting to TempleReady changed the wording on the submission
options dialog to more clearly indicate which individuals will be
included in the submission.
Search for the selected person on Family Search Internet Genealogy
Service Web site.
Added new temples and changed to the new names for existing temples.
When sizing the screen or tiling windows, the size of the font chosen
will now be more readable in cases where the window is narrow or wide.
When exporting to a GEDCOM file, you can now optionally include
multimedia references for individuals. When importing GEDCOM files,
multimedia references on individuals will be recognized and imported.
Default to show LD Data is now on when first installing the software.
Ditto for names and dates now works similar to ditto for places.
Eliminated the "Proxy" vs. "Living" baptism field; there are now
fields for "Temple" or "Place if living" which accomplishes what was
intended.
Multiple occurrences of the standard events (birth, christening,
death, burial, marriage) cna now be added from the edit dialogs and when
importing from a GEDCOM file.
A mechanism is available so that vendors of add-on products can
install their products on the Tools menu in PAF.
4.0.3
Spanish or English can be selected as the language for screens and
reports.
Setup can be run in either English or Spanish.
Data can be entered in more languages. Added support for code page
1250 (Latin-2, Central Europe) to the support already existing for 1252
(Latin-1, US, and Western Europe). Code page 1250 supports Albania,
Croatia, Czech, Faeroest, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak,
Slovenian. Code page 1252 supports Afrikaans, Basque, Catalan, Danish,
Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian,
Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish. In some cases you must be
running Windows in one of these languages to be able to add characters
from that language.
Custom events for an individual or marriage will now be automatically
ordered by date (after saving the record in which they were added).
Starting day of the week can be specified for Calendar reports.
	 	New Report for Sources
	 	Added "File Save As".
The book reports, the list of sources, and the place list reports can
now be printed to file. When you choose to print to a file, the report
is created in Rich Text Format (RTF) which can be read by most word
processors and by the Windows WordPad program.
You can now memorize and paste citations. This is a quick way to
repeat citations on multiple events.
Database repair will clean up the alpha browse indexes.
Database check/repair will report and repair invalid sex codes for the
husband and wife in a marriage if they are wrong.
When exporting to a GEDCOM file and you are exporting only the names
of living people, the sex codes will also be exported. This will help
when these files are imported into other programs.
When logging, database backup and restore will now be reported.
On Windows NT or greater, longer notes can be created. On Windows 95
or . . .
The CD version now includes the patch for PAF Companion 2.1 that
allows PAF Companion to work better with PAF 4.0. To install this patch,
run the file named pcomp21u.exe on the CD (or downloaded from
familysearch.org).
The CD version now includes the patch for PAF 3.01m. You can use this
on systems that have PAF 3.0 installed. To install this patch, run the
file named paf301m.exe on the CD.

	4.0.4, released 2/2/2000

Portuguese, German and French (in addition to English and spanish) can
be selected as the language for the program to use.
Browse buttons added to folders in Preferences.
	 	Improved the file check/repair:
In most cases, database errors "Source x less (or greater) pointer
is not less (or greater)" can be repaired.
Source records with missing titles are checked and repaired.
Event type records with missing fields are reported. These only
occur when importing from GEDCOM files created by other genealogy
software and must be fixed manually by the user.
			 	Multimedia records are checked.
Web pages are created in "My Documents" folder by default. In
Preferences you can choose the location where web pages will be created
Most of the reports can be printed to a file (in Rich Text Format).
To print to a file, check the "Print to file" checkbox on the Print
dialog. The checkbox is located just below the Help button on the Print
Reports dialog.
When creating a report to a file, index marks are placed in the
document so you can use your word processor to generate a complete index
of your document.
the place list includes custom events as well as standard events.
When importing GEDCOM files, you can disable the dialog that asks if
you want instructions about how to match/merge and link duplicate
individuals. You might want to do this if you frequently import GEDCOM
files and do not want to be prompted at the end of each import.
When adding a spouse, you can specify that the spouse is unknown by
pressing the "Unknown" button.
You can enter multiple marriages for the same couple. This alolows
you to add a re-marriage for a couple who was divorced.
In the File Check/Repair additional checks were added for bad marriage
chains for individuals.
PAF now maintains separaate ditto lists for given names and surnames.
You can turn off the "autocomplete" feature for names so that as you
type names they will not be automatically completed with a matching name
form the list of names recently entered.
In the Family View, you cna navigate to the next or previous MRIN wiht
the + or - keys.
The Page Up and Page Down keys can be used to cycle through the other
marriages for the primary individual when that individual has more than
one marriage.
In the Spanish version, "Masculino" and "Feminino" are used for the
sex codes instead of "Hombre" and "Mujer".
MIDI and video files can be played in the scrapbook and slide shows.
