I use a Mac and run both Mac PAF and Reunion 6 for Mac. (I also run some
Windows genealogy programs.) I used to run a Mac PAF group (we still meet
occasionally) and kept up with the add-ons. There are only a few add-on
programs for Mac PAF and, as I remember, none of them create a graphic
descendants chart. That's one of the reasons many Mac users have switched to
Reunion, plus all Reunion's other functions.

At one time, I downloaded Gene, a shareware Mac genealogy program, from the
Internet. I think it's still available. (If I can find the URL, I'll post
it.) You used to, and may still, be able to get it on disc from some
organizations. It will import (? or read) the Mac PAF data and generate the
type of chart you want. I can't remember if the chart included the locations
for the events; seems like it didn't. I think the locations are necessary.
Gene's chart was not as nice looking as Reunion's, but it was passable. I
don't think it put boxes around each person's data, but otherwise it was the
same as a drop down descendants chart (except it went from right to left).
They may have improved on Gene in later versions. Give it a try.

BTW, one of the other charts Gene generates is a ?relationship chart (can't
remember the exact name). As I recall, you can take any two people and the
program will draw a chart showing how they are connected.

What I used to do, is use Mac PAF for data entry and, when I wanted a
descendants box chart, I exported my data to Reunion. At that time I was
using Reunion v4 and the events in Mac PAF transferred without any problem to
Reunion v4. It might work with Reunion 5 or 6. If I get a chance, I'll try
this, sometime.

You could consider running Virtual PC and then using the PAF 4.x for Windows.
I have both on my computer. If you want, I can post or send separate info
about all this. There are various ways you can go, depending on whether you
will ever want to run other Windows programs on your Mac. Also, if you want
any advice about the other Mac genealogy programs, let me know. There are
some things you should know, before buying one.

Meanwhile - back to the Y2K Blizzard!

Regards, Valerie (Capital PAF Users' Group, Washington, DC area)

Subject: [PAF] Individual Search

Just recently my PAF has developed a problem when trying to find a person in
my database. I hit the search ICON and an error comes up. It is "An
unknown error occured while accessing an unnamed file". I hit OK.

Then the window comes up which states "Creating the Alphabetical Index file.
Please Wait". The program freezes up. Nothing can be done. I end up hitting
the "ALT - CTRL- DEL". This takes me out of the program completely.

What happened? What can I do to correct it?

Thank you very much.

Monroe Davis

Here's the URL that I referred to in an earlier message for
"Gene Macintosh Genealogy Software:"

Subject: [PAF] Solutions to two problems

One of my problems is that my surname is spelled several different
ways: Zeavie, Seavey, Seavy, Sevey, Sevy. When I would search for
Henry Seavey I'd have to search several times to make sure my search
was complete. Also, I found it very useful to look at the
alphabetical listing of names (CTRL-F) to locate duplicates. I tried
putting something like this in the surname field: SEAVEY (SEVEY) to
indicate the alternate spelling. This didn't work because the
alphabetical file was messed up. Now I'm trying the following: SEAVEY
in the surname field, and Thomas D. (Sevey) in the given name field to
let me and others know that this person used an alternate spelling.
This also preserves the alphabetical list. Do others have the same
problem? How have you solved it? Do you see a problem with this
solution (so long as I delete it before doing a Temple Ready file)?
How about an asterisk (*) at the end of the given name to indicate
that there is an alternate spelling or alternate surname.

Another problem is what to do when you don't know a date of birth.
When looking at folks in your data base, knowing at least an
approximate date is helpful in placing them. At one time I made use
of "ABT 1737" to deal with this problem. Someone suggested that this
is misleading because it is often used to indicate that Aunt Sally
said: "I don't remember when cousin Mary Jane was born, but it was
'about' 1737. I wanted something different from ABT when I would
approximate a date from a marriage date, birth date of a child, birth
of spouse or marriage of parent. Then I discovered that PAF allows
"EST" (estimated). This really does mean something different. It
tells the reader that the date was 'estimated' from some kind of
information. For estimates I use some standard genealogy averages:
males marry age 25, females marry age 21, first child born two years
later, subsequent children born every two years. Of course 'averages'
don't represent reality, but I'm finding it useful. Have others had
the same concern? Have others come up with different solutions?
