PAF easily supports more than that. It will support around a million records, but as the number gets higher certain functions (like alphabetical lists, etc.) will get slower.
PAF will shortly be available in Portuguese, too.

These instructions are good. However, I would suggest changing Step 3 to say "Click on 'Order Family History Resources'". That will always work. The link in "What's New" may not always be there, since only the newest things are listed there.

Hi Everyone,
Rumor has it that some of you still haven't downloaded the
program, PAF 4.0.x, and it's manual. Also, a few people have asked
for downloading directions. So, here they are. These were current
as of last week when I checked the site. Here are step by step
directions. Now you have no excuses for not having the program. (G)
I've checked this over, but let me know if you find any mistakes.
Directions for Downloading PAF 4.0.3 Program and Manual
(Valerie Gibbs)
1. Go to the LDS FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service main
page <http://www.familysearch.org/>. (Omit the <>)
BTW, accept the cookies.
2. Click on What's New in upper left corner.
3. In next screen (What's New), click on New Free Download of
Personal Ancestral File 4.0.3 (Nov 99).
4. In next screen (Family Search Online Distribution Center, Family History),
click on Software Downloads Free.
5. In next screen (Software Downloads Free), choose
1st item on list - Personal Ancestral File 4.0.3 English/Spanish.
(Notice that the 4th item on list is the PAF 4.x manual (English),
so you can download this later.)
6. In next screen (PAF description), click on "Free Proceed" button
in upper right side of screen.
7. In next screen (License Agreement), click on "Continue" button.
8. In next screen (Registration screen), enter the mandatory info at
top half of screen (first & last name, street, city, state, country,
zip, and e-mail address. Hit the "Register" button at bottom of
page.
9. In next screen (How To Download), click on words, "Click Here."
10. In next window, a dialog window, make a note of the name of the
file that will be downloaded (saved to a drive on your computer).
Also, make a note about which drive and folder on your computer
the file will be downloaded to. If you are a novice, use this default
setting. If you want, you can select another drive and folder.
Hit the "Save" button.
11. Next you will see a Transfer window with a progress bar. After
a few minutes, you will see the bar start to progress. When the
bar is completely filled, the download is finished. I don't think
you will get a message that the download is finished, but you are.
(Hint-They should put a message here.) If you do the download when
the Internet is less busy, it will go faster. Try 6 AM or 11 PM EST.
However, I've done it at 2 PM in the afternoon in 15-20 minutes.
12. After you download the program, you can then go back and download
the manual. Click on the "back arrow" up on the browser menu bar.
Mine is on the very left. Click on it and go back to the screen
that says, Software Downloads Free (as in step 5). Accept the
cookies as you go back.
13. Choose the 4th item on list, Personal Ancestral File 4.0 User
Guide - English.
14. In next screen (PAF Users Guide English, click on button,
"Free Proceed."
(Notice where it says, "Click Here" to get
Adobe Acrobat Reader. Later, if you don't already have Adobe
Acrobat Reader, version 4, you can download it. You don't need
the reader to download the manual, but you will need the reader
to read the manual and print it out. You will want v4, as it has
the option to print on both sides of a sheet of paper.) (More
about this in separate message.)
15. In next screen, click on words, "Click Here to Download".
16. In next window, a dialog window, click on the "Save" button.
Make a note of the file name (paf4.pdf) and the drive and folder
where the file will be downloaded (saved) to.
17. In next window, there will be a progress bar showing progress of
transfer (downloading of manual). When the bar is all the way
across, the transfer is finished. I don't think you will get a message
telling you this.
18. If you want to download Adobe Acrobat Reader, hit the "Back Arrow"
in your browser's menu and go back to window, PAF 4 User Guide (English).
See Step 14 above.
19. In the PAF 4 User Guide screen, in the sentence about Adobe Acrobat
Reader, click on the word, "Here", to download the reader. This will
take you to Adobe's page.
20. At Adobe's page, in Step 1, choose: English language for platform;
either Win 98, Win 95, Mac, or other, depending on which system you have;
and USA for location. Click box underneath to include searching
option. Mac users will want to download the Mac version (click and read
about .bin or .hqx files, and choose the version you want).
21. Skip Step 2. (Uncheck boxes about receiving notices and offers.)
22. In Step 3, Download 4.05, click on "Download" button.
The file size is 5.6-6.6 MB.
23. After the "Reader" is downloaded, you should read and copy two
files that are on that same webpage. They are: Installation
Instructions, and Troubleshooting Download Problems. Click on
the first file and when the file opens up, do a "Select All" and
then "Copy" the file to your clipboard. Then "Paste" it into a new
word processing document that you create for it. Then open the
second file, select all, copy, and paste it in the same document.
Remember to "Name" and "Save" the document.
24. You are finished. Log off the Internet.
25. To read the manual, launch Adobe Acrobat Reader. Go to the
File menu and choose "Open." In next screen, find, select, and
open the manual.

What do you do when you have two branches of the same family feuding over
whether the vowel is an e or an a, while two other branches feud over ch
vs gh ?? (g)
I have to fall one way or the other here to put it in print. So, would
you might taking a look at these sanitized facts and say who'd be your
first choice for further investigation?
Scene: man with common surname and UNCOMMON given name married in 1909;
spouse' family from MD to OH to IL to Oregon by 1911; he was in Oregon
when he died in the 1950s. I happen to have access to a 1900 Soundex
Sweep for his surname; out of approximately 6380 persons of the surname,
I find 7 with the given name...none in Oregon. (g)
I believe it's safe to omit from consideration the one born in 1899 (MO)
and the one born in 1837 (PA). Leaving 5 candidates:
b 1874; living in IA in 1900
b 1855; living in NY in 1900
b 1884; living in OH in 1900
b 1893; living in OH in 1900
b 1887; living in TX in 1900
Anyone care to venture a helping hand?
Cheryl
