Subject: [PAF] PAF Alternatives
I am a Ward Family History Consultant with extensive background in
computers. The official family history software is PAF, but "A Member's
Guide to Temple and Family History" indicates that other programs
besides PAF can be used to store your family history and submit it for
temple work using TempleReady. I contacted the Mesa Family History
Center, but they don't have a list of these programs. There is an
address to send for the list, but I was hoping to get a quick response
so that I can deal with the questions that I am getting. Can you send
me a copy of both the Windows and Mac programs that can be used instead
of PAF?

Suggest you e-mail the Church Family History Department:
FHDFHSUP@ldschurch.org. I would be interested in the answer as well as do
any of the commercial programs support Ancestral File Correction
submissions. Let me know

Mark, the quick and dirty answer to your question is: any program that
will produce a GEDCOM file to the 5.5 or lower standard WHICH YOUR FS
COMPUTER WILL READ is fine. This includes but is not limited to:
Ultimate Family Tree
Family Tree Maker
Brother's Keeper
Family Origins
Roots
Ancestral Quest
If you are LDS and doing this for Temple Work only, I STRONGLY urge
sticking to PAF. If you're using your work for other purposes, then you
may have preferences among the programs.

Does anybody know if a program exists that can troubleshoot
GEDCOM files? I'm thinking of something that would display
discrepant code lines on the screen, and offer the user
alternatives for correction and/or disposition of the
unknown variables? Just something that would be able to get
the file up and running?
I would think somebody could make a mint if they could come
up with one.
Just wondering if there was an alternative to scanning
THOUSANDS of line of code by hand. I have no specific file
troubles now, but from time to time in the past there have
been those moments when such a utility would have been worth
a lot of money to me.

I would like to know that as well. Once I was attempting to run a
GEDCOM (prepared from PAF no less) through Temple Ready and it kept
blowing up on me and I finally wrote down the error message and
looked at the GEDCOM trying to figure out what was wrong with it. I
finally discovered that the notes were too long. I deleted them to
just a few lines of code and Temple Ready took it with no more fuss.

By far the best program to use as an alternative to PAF Is Legacy. We =
keep records in both PAF 3.0 and Legacy. The good thing about Legacy is =
that it runs beautifully in Windows and is constantly updated at no cost =
to you over the InterNet. You can download a demo version of Legacy at =
their website. I think you will like a lot of its features. One =
feature we like very much is the ease with which photos ( as many as you =
want for each person ) can be put into the files. i agree that PAF 3.0 =
is the eaiest and simplest program to use for getting names ready for =
the temple but Legacy will do it with eaqual ease. Legacy can read PAF =
3.0 files.

I think that any Gedcom compatible program could use the Temple ready
program as long as the program itself has a place for LDS ordinances to
enter in the field.
One the comes to mind is Ancestral Quest which runs in windows ( a sister
program of PAF). I believe that brothers Keeper has a place for
ordinances as well as Roots, Family tree maker, and Family Origins. I
think Generations does too.
For Macintosh, I heard Reunion does, correct me if I'm wrong.
As long as you have a disk with a GED extension on it, the FamilySearch
program will recognize what format it is for temple submission. IF any of
you have any of the other compatible GEDCOM programs, make a small test
file to see if it supports it. I'm willing to stake that it could handle
it.

Thanks for mentioning that! I've had some patrons with GEDCOMs that
simply won't open. Maybe this is why. I never thought to look because
TR doesn't need/want/use the notes and it never occurred to me anyone
would even include 'em. Thanks!

The Family History Department developed two programs that were mentioned in
the August 1996 PAFinder newsletter of the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group.
GEDCHK is a syntax-checker program that analyzes a GEDCOM file for
compliance with the GEDCOM versin 5.5 speicifications. It produces a report
that shows problems.
GED2FIX is a GEDCOM-to-Fixed-Format-File Conversion Utility.
I don't know if they are still available or if either one will be of help for
your problem. Contact the Family History Department by phone 1-800-346-6044
or e-mail:
fhdfhsup@ldschurch.org.

Actually it isn't as simple as most think. Only a few of the
programs prepare a good TempleReady. Richard L. Halliday did a mini
research on some, I think it was 4, of the top genealogy software
programs and think he only came up with Legacy as doing it just as
PAF did.
He later sent me a message about the new Ancestral Quest which he is
beta testing. This Windows program shares the files of PAF.
They are just getting their update (3.0 version) to work with Paf
3.0. It is supposed to be available next month. Their previous
versions worked with PAF 2.x.
If y ou didn't see Richard's note on his comparisons and you'd
like to I'd be happy to forward it. Richard was involved with the
Silicon Valley group and is quite computer knowledgable too. I am
only somewhat computer knowledgable but have been working with PAF
since the 2.0 version and have been a Ward FH consultant for many
years and am now a FH Director.
Good Luck,

I am getting a larger drive on which I hope to download the various
demo's
that are on the net that are PAF compatible.
I have PAF 3.0 and 2.31, Mac PAF and I basically work in Family Origins
7.
These are all quite inexpensive and I find FO very easy to understand
and
use.PAF is designed without extras for people who have less powerful
computers. The basic Family Tree Maker is inexpensive too, but rapidly
ascends in price as you add data disks.
