Peter,
I have a report from 1990 that was published in COMPU.GEN, the newsletter
of the Computer Genealogy Society of San Diego, describing the experiences
of three of us in gedcomming between PAF 2.2, ROOTS III, and Family Roots
(the only one of the three without a version number mentioned). We did a
three-way demo at our meeting showing what happened when we transferred
data between the three via GEDCOM, although Family Roots didn't have a
GEDCOM program yet, so the Family Roots person had to use a utility they
put out called PAF & BACK. I am sure that was in PRO-DOS days, as I
remember that. Near that time, I also did an import for this same person of
a 5,000+ member Family Roots database (the file created with PAF & BACK)
into PAF 2.2. There was quite a lot of editing to do. I especially remember
that Family Roots allowed people to be in the database with no RIN, and
when they came into the PAF database, those people, if children in a
family, were just listed in the father's notes instead of given separate
records as children.
If your files are this old, or if you would like to see the information in
these articles anyway, let me know and I'll type them up and send to you
privately.
I think your biggest problem will be finding an Apple II or IIE with
PR0-DOS -- and finding one that still works! -- to open the files, and then
finding PAF & BACK, if Family Roots 3.0 was a pre-GEDCOM version.

Thanks Joan for your answer, even if it was all bad news. We where afraid
that it was not going to be easy or even possible.
One question ; Is there a way to print out the file tru a word processor
like a GedCom? Or set it over on a IBM compatible disk and do the above???
Appreciate your replies...........Groetjes..........Peter!!!!!

No. Program files cannot be printed out. They are all computer codes and
characters. GEDCOM files are ASCII files, so they can be printed. If you
can't find the hardware to read the files, you might contact the developer,
Steve Vorenberg. and see if he can help you. The following e-mail addresses
are from 1993, so I don't know if they are current, but you could try them:
72470,3027@compuserve.com
CGMR62B@prodigy.com
The company was Quinsept, Inc., PO Box 216, Lexington, MA 02173. Steve went
out of business last year.
Another option: The Master Genealogist includes a routine for direct import
of Family Roots data files, but the information on the TMG web site doesn't
specify a FR version #. The URL is http://www.whollygenes.com/html/fr.htm.
You can also click on the TMG e-mail address and ask them what to do with
your files. Bob Velke, the developer, doesn't do anything with Apple II, I
know, but he might be able to give suggestions.
Good luck,

Any chance of using something like Norton Utilities and converting A COPY
OF the program files to ASCII so it could be printed to file, and beaten
into a GEDCOM by brute force? As the blurb on one of my pet programs says
"It's harder, but noble as ****".
Of course, if TMG will import it so much the better -- it's easier.

I had an early version of Family Roots (MS-DOS version), and an early version
of some kind of GEDCOM. When I created the GEDCOM file from Family Roots,
half the records were not linked, and the only program that would accept the
GEDCOM file was Family Treemaker. Then I had to go in and link the unlinked
individuals. An onerous, but not impossible task. But I had only about 3,000
individuals in the file.

I assume the original message referred to the DATA files. Not
program files. (But that doesn't help much; those data files contain much
all-important relationship information. Which might not be convertible.)

A *possible* suggestion; investigate emulators. (Programs that run
on an IBM-compatible PC but operate as another system.)
I know nothing about the older Apples, but assume that (since so many
emulators are available) one is available.
BUT: that might be more trouble than it's worth.

No genealogy programs data files are ASCII files. They can't be read except
with their own program.
