Dear Richard and John:
I had Norton's Anti virus on my windows 95 while running PAF3.0M and Companion
and never had a problem with it crashing. I now am using windows 98 plus
screen saver's and still have not had a problem with it crashing.
When I had windows 95 I had a problem with the printer but with new driver for
printer that problem was solved. So far I have been very happy with my PAF
3.0M and companion 1.0. Haven't ventured to get companion 2.0 yet as I have
heard they are having problems with that.
Hoping your problems are soon solved
Carol

I have been running PAF Companion 2.0 for quite some time with no problems.
And, I might mention no problems with PAF3.0 while using Norton Virus
Protection.
Seems to me the computers of those having trouble might need a good "physical"
exam.

I haven't had any problems with my computer and PAF3.0m and PAF companion 1.0
and I doubt Richard's computer needs a good physical exam. There are
problems for PAF Companion 2.0 and SLC needs to address them. I also had a
problem a while back with PAF 3.0m and SLC acknowledged that I must have a bad
disk which they replaced and so far I have not had any problems.
All I attempted to do is let John know that it may not be his computer but the
program disk itself. However as most of us know a clean computer is a happy
computer. That means scan disk and defrag should be run on a regular basis
to make sure that you don't have any problems and to keep your computer
running smoothly and quickly.

How do I send a newly found cousin's husband at a Seminary a report on
her family from PAF if they do not have PAF or another geneology
program? What do I do simply put because I grow less knowledgeable
about these things. Thanking you in advance. Please reply to my e-mail
address in order to to tie up the network of better-informed people.

The computer that started all these questions is new right out of the
box with PAF3.0M just installed. Regards John J. Totten

Richard: Thanks for your response. I thought that I was the only one
who had this sort of problem and I thought it was me. I had a little
time to play with it and deleted all the files in the PAF3 directory
except the data folder, started up in DOS and ran setup.exe from the
command line. It seems to be working correctly right now. I think that
the place that I ran into problems previously was when I tried to run it
in a Window rather than from full screen so I won't try that again. At
any rate in the whole process it scrambled some of the data. In this
case it put in more spouses than really existed. I am glad that I had a
recent back-up to put back. It was bad enough that when I ran the scan
program it kicked it out of the PAF program.
I can go into the program through the Companion program and everything
seems to work right now as I said. I think that the virus program is
running in the background and I didn't make any other changes. I didn't
have any screen savers running.
I will put out another message if I run into any further problems.

Friends;
I purchased Norton's Anti Virus because my son liked it so well and I
could update the virus definitions using my modem. He never had any
problems with that program. As soon as I started it, I began to have
problems loading Windows 95. About one startup in five will stall. I
recommended it to a friend. When I loaded it on her machine, we were
unable to ever start Windows 95. I was able to start Windows in a
crippled mode and then uninstall Norton's Anti Virus. Her computer has
worked without any more problems. Don't ask me what the difference is -
I don't know.

Subject: RE: [PAF] Online genealogy & FHC admin guides
At a meeting of Family History Center Directors in Provo, Utah a couple
months ago, I met some new Directors who were having a tough time training
their staff in genealogical research and in administration of a Family
History Center. Since I was already developing a genealogy course for my
staff, my ward, and my Elders Quorum, I thought it would be neat to put it
on the Web for others, too, and add to it a guide to growing a Family
History Center. I hope both guides will be of some help to those beginning
their research, or struggling with an ineffective Family History Center.
Descriptions of both guides are posted at
http://www.itsnet.com/~ritcheym/genealog.htm.
The guides are works-in-progress -- the first few lessons are posted, and
I'll post new sections each week. At the meeting I attended, I got the
feeling that the information was needed ASAP, so that's how I'm posting it.
