Subject: GEDCOM ERROR MESSAGE
I was making up several GEDCOMS (different families) to send off to a
web-site;
for some reason when I attempted to made a GEDCOM on one particular
family, I received a message: "Data Cannot be Read". Has anyone else
encountered this message and what does it mean; what do I have to do to
get the data read? I have never had any problem in the past with this
particular information/family being used for GEDCOM.

You can not read from the a: drive because it is a backup file, similar to
a zip file scrunched together and unusable untill restored back as a data
(paf) file.
Have PAF companion "read" the files in the directory called PAF3\data\
and then pick a with a PAF extention. Like this...."mynamefile.paf"

You may have encountered a small part of the disk that might have gone
bad, or the disk drive is going bad. I hope its not the latter since the
average life of a disk drive is 3-5 years depending on how much use is
going out of it.
If you still can not read the disk, you might try another. If it reads
that one then you know it's the disk gone bad. If you have a backup of
the disk, no problem. If not, try scandisk on the disk first to see if
the file will recover. Worse case scenario: just rebuild the file over
again.

Subject: Re: [PAF] GEDCOM ERROR MESSAGE
Olive,
I had this same thing happen to me. I am not computer literate
enough to know if there is only one thing that makes this particular
error code come up or not. But in my case it was connected to the
Sources.
You can compare my sequence of events and see ifyours is the similar.
I use PAF 3.0M and could send a gedcom directed to 2.31 but got the
same error code "Data cannot be read" whenever I directed it to be
received by 3.0. This happened when I tried to send my whole data
base or my maternal grandfather's line. If I sent other lines in my database
I was OK.
I finally called support 3 times before I got it solved. The first
two suggestions didn't work. The third fellow said there is a bug
associated with the sources and that occassionally it does tie up the
data.
The solution was to make a gedcom of my database and direct it to
Paf 2.31 or any of the 2.2 or above series. Then add the gedcom to
2.31( or whichever one you used. I used 2.31 because it was on my
computer. You could take it to a FHC too). Then make a gedcom of that
database. When it is imported back into PAF 3.0 the sources now appear
as entries in the notes because Paf 2.31 has no source fields. I then could
make a gedcom from 3.0 and direct it to be received by Paf 3.0. Of course
there were no source fields, but I could get all the info to my relatives.
The fellow in support said they would be working on that problem. I
suppose they will try to have it corrected for the next update or
version. I have only heard of one other person, since I talked to him
that this happened to.
As you might guess, I don't use the sources anymore.
You might try this and see if it clears up your problem. If not,
you would still have your original database intact.
Good Luck, Hope it works for you as it did for me.

Hello.......I need some advise, I have 2.31 Paf in a 486DX2/66--16 MB
Ram---425 HD Memory w/duel spin CD Rom.
I had some problems back in January that changed some things on my Paf
program. I noticed that on my Temp. Configeration menu after drive for
data disk: .\ and I get my data alright. But I am trying to figure out
how I can split the different lines in my database so I think I need to
make different files to come off my Data disk. Reading the instruction
manuel it probably should read; Drive for Data Disk:C:\Paf\Data\ than
I think I could name my different files and come off that. But how do I
rename this to read C:\PAF\Data instead of ".\"

I would make a separate GEDCOM to export to put on the floppy or to the
HD subdirectory, then read in the GEDCOM from that. Make sure you do it
as a descendant line down to the person on the list. That way you get
only that one line instead of all lines.

if you just want this to do only in the current session and come back
later at another time to your default data base, do this
go to the utilities menu, select tempory config, then on the line for
data disk type in A:
(if you want it to go to the floopy disk, the floppies can have
subdirectories just like the hard drive, Example A:\patronname\ or
A:\PAF\patronname
then f1 to save for the current screen (twice) and you are ready to go to
the floppy disk.
If you want to make it permanant, you do the same over again, except you
do it in the config program to make it permanant.
If you want to switch between databases, leave the current database as
is, on the command line (if your go out to DOS) type in: FR -dA:\
You will then be able to access both databases by using the f3 key to
switch between databases. You can't do this in the program itself. This I
think was one of the undocumented things you can do with PAF.

Hi Dwioght, its' Dick again. The configuration (which is regular
config, not temp config) is fine. To split your database use GIE-Gedcom
and make a gecom which includes the lines you want to copy. Then create
a new database, (IN A NEW FOLDER) and use GIE-Gedcom- Add All records to
a Database. When done you an configure a desktop, or folder ICON for
each of your PAF 2.31 databases, so when you click on that Icon, the
database you want automatically opens.

Dwight:
This is an easy one-- just point to the location and type in the correct
location that you want. Your old files are probably in the root
directory of the C drive or of the program directory-- it depends on how
the program code is written.
I do not suggest that a database is ever divided, since that will keep
you from printing any complete pedigrees that would cross the split.
Also, it would be impossible to find any duplicates without doing the
same operation in all of your split databases. Yes-- this will take some
time to search and do match/merges but you'll be glad you DID NOT split
your database later.
My database is approaching 100,000 people and I really need a 450 mHz
Pentium 2 running Windows NT to have the speed to do the maintenance
operations. But, I can easily tell if I have a duplicate record or a new
connection when importing. I would highly suggest that you get one of
the processor upgrades to Pentium and add more memory, if possible, and
get a removable 1 GB hard drive.

Subject: Re: [PAF] Re: Assistance with paf companion
If Paf companion is reading from the Paf3 file, as Peter says, below.
You can get Paf 3.0 to read the data on the A: drive if it is a
data disk, not a backup. On the Select File to Open Screen, select
Open File Not Shown (at the bottom of the screen). Then at that Screen select
Change Drive/Directory. Then in the little Change Drive/Directory
Window that comes up, type A:. Any Paf3 files on the disk will be
shown and you highlight the correct one and push enter to select it.
I don't know anything about companion. But the data on A: will then
be read by Paf 3.0.
Good luck,
Alice Harris

Barry,
My printer, a H-P, is selected correctly. The problem I'm writing about is
when I print to file, or to my hard disk. When I open up the document in Word,
it isn't usable. Squares, other shapes and symbols, what I consider to be
machine language, make up some or most of the document.
Thanks,
Brenda
