I just received a notice about the release of PAF Companion 2.0. I have the
PAF Companion from 1997. Is the new one lots better? I do like current one.
Thanks,
Brenda

Hi Brenda,
One of the gedcom screens will ask you to choose between Paf 3.0, and
2.31, choose 2.31. I have had no loss of data.

Yes, it is lots better except they took out the Pedigree chart that was
printed in Landscape and left in only the one that is printed Portrait.

I would like to copy notes from 3.0 to 2.31. Someone told me I could have both
of those windows open to transfer notes, but I can't figure out how. Has
anyone done this?
Thanks,
Brenda Ericsson

It is easy, I will give instructions for Windows 95.
1. Open your PAF3 database, and make sure it is running in a window, not
in dos. If it is in DOS, press alt-enter, then it should be in a
window. Click on the BOX between the "-" and the "X" in the upper right
corner. that should reduce the window to about 1/4 of the screen.
2. Open PAF2.31 database, and do the same, making it 1/4 of the screen.
3. Go to the same record in both databases, open the note pad in each.
4. Click on the database you want to copy from, (you should be in the
notepad screen), and then Click on the MARK Text box, The box that is
blank (two to the left of the PASTE box) at the upper left of the
windows task bar. Now place the cursor at the beginning of the text you
want to copy. Hold down the left mouse button and drag to mark the text
to copy. Now click in copy, (between the MARK and the PASTE box).
5. Now click on the window with the program & screen where you want to
paste the text, position the cursor where you want the text, click on
the PASTE box in the window now active.
You are done, just be sure to save as you go to the next record.
This works for most fields between PAF3 and PAF2.31, and Ancestral
Quest, or really most any program, including a word processor.
The exceptions are where the fields are of different length, such as the
name fields in paf, and where the two programs handle the names
differently. PAF2.31 has Name level 1, 2, 3 and Place Name level 1,2,3 &
4. Where as PAF3 puts the name(s) in the same field with commas to
indicate the level.
This works best in the notepads, date and the ordinance fields, where
there are no "levels" to deal with. You always want to be in the EDIT
screen in both programs to copy and paste. When you are in the notes
screen you are in an edit screen.

Subject: assistance with paf companion please
I have only recently got the PAF3 and the PAF companion. Previously I had
always worked from floppy disc in A drive. Problem arose so now I use hard
disk with A drive as backup. The problem was that I could not find out how
to read the A drive in the Companion. A friend visited yesterday with her
disc(she's away from home and wanted to put some new information on it) We
were able to do that but I still could not print out from Companion. Can you
help please? I can't believe that it is not possible. I am very new to
Windows Computing and still an idiot really.Oh yes I have windows 98 if it
makes any difference.
Thanks so much
Pauline
