Yes just put it on the C:\ drive.

You go to the utilities menu and select temporary configuration. The
curser will be flashing at the data drive line. There you type in
the name of the data base you want.
If you can't remember the name, as I can't sometimes, you will need
to check the files in Paf 2.31 first. You can do that either
with a dos DIR or in windows. In Win95 it's in MY COMPUTER and I
can't remember for sure in Win 3.1 but I think it is in the program
Manager.

I want to disagree with the statement that there is no more Temple files.
I just submitted several 100 names to the Chicago Temple in mid Aug. and
have 669 more ready to send. They are wanting people to do their OWN
families. But for anyone that is unable to get to a temple there is the
Temple file to send names to. For us with poor health and that live to far
away from a Temple the Temple File is the only way we can get our families
work done.

Subject: [PAF] Notes Conversion from 2.01 to 3.0
I've successfully completed data conversions on my parents databases from
the old version to the current (I assume 3.0 is current) version of PAF.
The problem that I have is that I can't figure out how to convert the
notes. My mother has invested quite a fair amount of time in the notes
(about 600K worth of input) so please don't say to retype it. Is there a
way to get at the file externally and retain all the keys necessary to
reattach it, say through Microsoft Access or Dbase or something?
Maybe if we had migrated it through 2.31, but we didn't and don't have a
copy of 2.31 to experiement with, as it is unavailable from Salt Lake City.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The "proper" way to do this, is to use first the conversion program that
came with PAF 2.31 (I can send "convert.exe" to you by email) then in PAF
3.0m use the U option for update data files. One of the files listed should
be "indiv2.dat"
Highlight it and press the "enter" key. PAF 3.0m, give it a name ,and it
will now convert the file into the newest format.
Before you start working with this file, I suggest to make a GEDCOM from
that data file first and import it into a newly created file to clean it up.

Could someone tell me when the church requested that no more names should be sent
into Temple File?
My understanding of it is that even though "Family File" has been replaced by the
new "Family Names System" (for people who can provide proxies) the old "Temple
File" (for people who cannot provide proxies) has not changed.
Also, as the FHC Director, I was told earlier this year to encourage the
non-members who use the centre to send their names into both the "Ancestral File"
and "Temple File".
As far as I am aware, even though there have been changes in the way submissions
are handled "Temple File" is the same as it always was.

Subject: Re: [PAF] Notes Conversion from 2.01 to 3.0
I have converted several databases, using a number of methods,
including reentering all of the notes. I will tell you about the one
method that I believe worked the best. What I did was send the
data back to PAF2.31 with Version 4 GEDCOM. I then ran the
PAFCTOOL on the database. Before doing the note edit, I made
a copy of the note dump file. (Be sure to change the name to
something different.) Then using Word Perfect I edited all of the
"!" marked source notes out of the file. I then did spell check
and grammar check. I reread all of the notes to be sure I didn't
want to change anything else before reimporting them back into
PAF2.31. I then created a new GEDCOM. Ran GEDWRAP on it.
I was then ready to import the database into PAF3.0M.
Next step is to edit all of the narrative notes out of the second copy
of note dump. You will then need to print this file. I did not file any
better way of putting the source notes into the PAF3.0 than to retype,
but as you only have to type any source one time it is not too bad.
You now have the opportunity to make the sources more uniform.
We all learn as we go.
I did not say this was an instant fix, but it is doable, and probably an
improvement on the overall database.
I certainly know how you feel as I have over 12M of narrative notes in
one of my databases and 7.5M in the other. I was not thrilled with the
prospect. Loosing the notes was not an option and continuing to put
data into PAF3.0 without making the correction was only delaying the
inevitable and making for a larger job.
Hope this helps.

Yes, if you keep the number of letters in the names/place fields to the
same number that is supported by PAF2.31. Paf3 supports somthing like
128 letters, PAf2.31 somthing like 16. Also the "sources" will end up
in the notes for 2.31. Don't expect that you can then gedcom the data
back into 3.0 and find the sources in the source fields. They will
remain in the note pad.

As I understand it, the only things you might loose are some of the
new things that Paf 3.0 can do that 2.31 can't, like long names,
diacritics, etc.

I believe that the LDS church has switched to a digital
satellite delivery system now. I don't think anybody with a
regular C-band reciever can pick it up without one of the
new digital ones. Supposedly they did this so they could
"target" specific broadcasts to specific meetinghouses
throughout the world, via the serial number of the reciever.
Hopefully the LEGACY TV project will come to fruition here
sometime in the next 3 months. They plan to offer most LDS
broadcasts and related programming to the world as a regular
cable and DBS satellite channel. Supposedly the proposal
sits on the desk of the First Presidency at this very
moment. Once they give the OK, then they should be on the
air almost immediately. They already have everything else
in place.
Their web page may be found at:

If anybody else has updated information, please advise.

Bredna;
PAF 3.0 supports diacritics (marks that modify the sound of a letter),
but PAF 2.31 does not. Consequently, if you have Scandinavian, Germanic,
Latin, etc. names which have accents, tilde, umlaut, etc. in PAF 3.0,
they will not transfer to PAF 2.31.
