I followed your example and put test1016 where the * was and then pressed
the OK button and it generated me a report in Word Perfect with the name
c:\pcomp\test1016.wp I use Word Perfect but I think the wri extension
refers to notepad or wordpad.

Paf backup files, any number of other programs data files, paper print outs
of data files, you name it we have seen it.
I have put on our computers a simple batch file, that will do a "scandisk"
and then a "dir" to look for all *.sub files. I have not heard any
complains about faulty disk or missing *.sub files from our patrons since.
Keep up the good work , your "payday" for all this will come.

Subject: [PAF] PAF Qualified File is NOT a Temple Submission File
I surely agree with Cheryl that a PAF Qualified File is not a Temple
Submission File.
I would like to add that running a file through TempleReady does NOT
find all of the ordinances for an individual or couple. I just finished
a test in which I found eight entries for an my great grandfather in the
Ordinance Index which TempleReady probably would have found. I then ran
a parent search where I found 38 entries for his parents. I knew that he
could not pronounce the "h" sound so we are still not sure whether his
mother's maiden name was Alroyde, Olroyde, Holroyde or even possibly
Aldrich. By being a little creative I was able to find six more entries.
Running TempleReady would NOT have found all of these entries. Two days
ago I ran a test which confirmed this.
When I finished I had a file holding 52 entries from the Ordinance
Index. We know that there are only nine children of John and Ann Alroyde
(or Holroyde). Some of those duplications were unavoidable as the work
was done before the IGI, GIANT and the Temple Index Bureau files existed,
but too much of it was done recently. That represents too many hours
spent duplicating already done ordinances which could have been used
doing work for other worthy people. This is not as serious for me as I
am now living just about 25 min from the Portland Temple, but there was a
time when it was a all day trip for me to drive from Las Cruces, New
Mexico to Mesa, Arizona.
Just a connected thought. . . In 1994 when my wife and I were serving
in the Family History Center in Buffalo Grove, Illinois (about 25 miles
north of the Chicago Temple) we were asked to participate in a sealing
session. About half way through the sealer called a break to rest our
knees. He then related the following:
"Not long ago a group came out from Salt Lake and conducted a
conference for all of us temple workers. One of them told us that when
we finish the sealing work in the temple, the names of those individuals
are added to the top of the list for teaching the gospel to." While I
cannot give you the name of the individual who told us that, I remember
thinking at that time "If I were the mission president in Paradise, I
would prefer to send my missionaries to those for whom the saving
ordinances had already been performed. That way, I would use the time of
my missionaries much more efficiently, and possibly gain additional
missionaries in the process."

How to Create & Save PAF Charts & Reports.....?
I'm sorry, but this will have to be a little "wordy".
I have had several very nice, helpful people replying with instructions that
are terse or over my head. This one for example: "you need to create the
ahnentafel report first in PAF 3.0. Under (P)print, choose "pedigree charts"
and then choose Ahnentafel report". There have been others. Thank you for
your efforts.
Let me explain that I am very familiar with the User's Manual beginning page
121 where it speaks of "Creating" a file of record to share…then qualifies
that by saying "creating a GEDCOM" file". I know how to create Gedcoms.
But, when I reach the ending of the instructions all I find is "Print".
It appears to me that the magic word is "create", and that is exactly what I
want to do…"create" an ahnentafel, or whatever report is desired. How do I
create a report without printing it? I have printed reports all over the
place. How do I create reports and save them in Word, or wherever? A file
where I can go to copy them? I need to learn how to copy charts or short
reports into an email message, and alternately how to "attach" longer reports.
It appears that the only way I am going to "get the picture" is for someone to
treat me as the juvenile that I am (I'm 83), take me through it on a step-by-
step basis in PAF 3.0. For example: start with me in PAF on the small
pedigree screen with the individual selected for the beginning name of an
ahnentafel chart. So far the instructions seem to be click "P", and choose
"Pedigree charts", then choose Ahnentafel report". (I have done that a
hundred times…no problem.) I have also printed some reports and charts out
of PAF Companion 2.0. I have used the "Print Screen" button (next to F12) to
copy and attach to email, but that is limited to what I can pull up on the
screen.
Your patience is appreciated.....Maurice Holladay

This isn't too difficult. When you choose (P)rint, the first box has an
option at the end to change the print destination. Select this, then
select Save to Disk File. Another box will pop up asking you to input a
file name. After doing this, you can then print out whatever chart you
want, and it will be saved on your disk under the file name you typed.
This will be an ASCII file, but you will be able to open it in any word
processor and dress it up as you see fit. Good luck.

Name of File Maurice.txt or Ahentafel.txt
(File name isn't important, that you remember it when you want to bring it
into your word processing program. Then you will meed to enter where it
can be found i.e. C:\PAF3\DATA\Maurice.txt
Drive/Path C:\PAF3\DATA\

Maurice,
Type in any name you want to. Whatever will help you identify what the
file is. Same thing for the location (drive/path). For instance, call the
file ahnentaf and save it in the Paf3 directory.
