Subject: Re: [PAF] Ancestral File Update

I haven't heard anything official from any of my usual sources, but a
patron came in Thursday and asked if we had the new version. He was a
little upset that we didn't, but couldn't/wouldn't get specific about
what made him think there *was* a new version. For all I could get out
of him, his rationale may have been that "it's been X years, I'll go look
at the new version."

I'd be MORE than pleased to find out there is one in the pipeline!

Preparation of a new release of Ancestral File is in progress. It

Nineteen of you responded to the offer of PAF cartoons. All of the
responses will be in the mail within the hour, except for D.K. He has
not yet sent me his mailing address.
All packets are going directly to the post office including E.R. in
Finland.
If anyone else wants copies of some 8 1/2 x 11 cartoons which
illustrate some aspects of PAF (e.g., GEDCOM, sources, diacritics, long
names, support), just send me your name and mailing address. I will wait
several days before making another batch of them.

Jim,

Try phoning 1-800-453-3860 Ext 2584
This is the Salt Lake City number for information about PAF.

or 1-800-537-5950
which is the office that actually takes orders for it.

If they can't (or won't) tell you, they should at least be
able to refer you to some appropriate person.

At least the phone calls are free.

helpful there for some of you. It has most of the syllabus material from
our seminar. It is fairly basic material.

OH, oh. 1-800-346-6044 is the Family History Support number to be used for
information of this sort. 1-800-453-3860 is the general church number and
not to be given out to patrons of FHC and the general public.

From: rhaldy@juno.com (Richard L Halliday)
Subject: [PAF] Printing from PAF

Susan;
I have a similar problem in that I bought a Windows Only printer. I
could not print from PAF when I ran PAF using DOS 6.0 or when I ran it
from PAF Companion. While we were testing PAF 3.0 I notified them in the
Church Office Building and I suggested a solution. They decided that my
solution would work, but that it was too much work. PAF Companion 2.0
has added a couple of reports to its repertoire, but the one you want is
not there.
   I have found two solutions.
First, and the one I like least, change the printer destination to a
disk file instead of your hp DiskJet. When the job is finished, close
PAF and open your word processor. The file will be in ASCII (also called
DOS) format.
Second, the one I like best, but which I cannot guarantee will work
for you run PAF under the Windows DOS instead of under PAF Companion.
From the desktop go to Start and click. Move to Programs and click.
Then move the cursor to MS DOS Prompt and click. Now run PAF. To run
PAF, you may be able to simply type PAF. If this does not work then type
CD PAF3 <Enter>. Finally type PAF <Enter>. Now you may find that the
reports will print. I found it necessary to change my printer driver to
hp Laser II - Limited. Note that it takes a long time to print. By this
I mean that the wait seems like several minutes.
Finally, I suggest that you write, telephone and pray that the PAF
people make ALL of the PAF reports available through PAF Companion.

Richard and Everyone:

I have also been having many system failed sessions:

I leave my computer running 24/7 and have noticed the following
problems, lately:

a) I am running Windows 95 w/ Service Pack 1 loaded and several
updates-- OLE, Kernel, etc. then recently I updated my Dial-up
Networking software to version 1.2 and then 1.3.

b) I run Netscape's Communicator Browser and am trying out the Beta of
4.5, both Pre-Release 1 and 2.

c) It seems that I can no longer have my browser running and open up my
PAF database or any other program-- my browser crashes-- rather I can no
longer access any web pages or my E-mail.

d) This is also a problem when I exit the browser and the Dial-up
Networking Connection.

Do these problems sound familiar?? It is very frustrating, as I cannot
shut-down Windows normally but have to resort to turning the power off.
If you are experiencing the same problems or have any solutions-- HELP
!!

It has not done this except in the past 2-3 weeks.

Thanks,

I do a lot of internet surfing and check my several databases often (all
are PAF 3.0M) with mine being almost 100,000 records.

Is it possible to disable those warning screens that come up every time
I enter data that is not conforming to the usual way of entering it? I
find that on PAF 3.0 I can enter questionable dates and place names in a
way that I could not on earlier PAF; this way it is in front of me when I
look at a Ped Chart or FGS and I do not have to read my notes or
remember to high-light this information after/if I print out the
chart(s). I mark this info is such a way that reminds me to check
further for information/sources that may be more accurate.
