Subject: [PAF] [PAF3 Source query]
Dear List Members,
Now that I have got used to PAF3.0M, I feel it is high time to tackle
the huge job of moving my Documentation Notes into the Source database
and preparing my research for submission to Ancestral File.
I would be grateful for some advice and guidance in one specific area of
source inputting - wills and land deeds.
I am currently working on a group of families in a Yorkshire parish, for
which the Anglican registers are lost before the 1690s. Mercifully, the
Quaker registers are extant and these include some members of most of
the local families. Nevertheless, in many cases, proof of relationships
is to be found only in the probate files and the records of land
transfer.
What I thought of doing is to cut-and-paste each will abstract into the
General sources field of the testator or testatrix. Then, in the General
sources field of every family member whose relationship is given in the
will, I could put a reference something like "Named as son in the will
(date of will) of John Smith of Wherever, qv". The whole abstract would
not have to be repeated, because it is already in the database and
easily located.
Do you think this would be acceptable to Ancestral File, or should I
leave the will abstract in the Notes field, with a <!PROBATE:> tag?
In the case of the Deeds abstracts, I have a number which are the sole
source of precise relationships. It seems sensible to treat these in the
same way as the probates.
I look forward to your advice.
Thankyou

IMHO, I think one line of source documentation is sufficient to reference
than the whole will. Just tell where you found it (film #, Book #, Page
#, etc) is easy enough than writing out the whole will. Some receipients
would gladly accept the whole documentation, others may not. This is
total up to the person submitting in the information of their ancestors.
I would use with the Note tag indicator (!PROBATE: ) . As for Land the
same type of indicator (!LAND DEED: ) showing film #, Book # and the
parcel of land (since in the early America boundaries change so much to
the present).
As a general rule of thumb, each Individual should have at least one note
source to verify with in case of some dispute over datee or spelling.
Generally, there is no set limit of how many notes a person wants to
contribute, but most will have at least 1 note or maybe nothing at all.
That's just my 5¢ worth.
Tom

I came across this E-Mail address on the List of "LDS Mailing Lists" and hope you might be
able to help me.
I have installed PAF 3 and I am having problems with the printing (EPSOM STYLUS COLOUR
400).
The printer is not printing condensed and therefore taking two lines to print what should
fit on one line. (if that makes sense).
Have you come across this problem before and do you have any idea which printer I can
select from the "printer list" to correct the problem?
ANY ideas or advice would be really appreciated.
Thankyou
Jan Dann

If "Epson-stylus limited didn't work, try HP deskjet.
There may be something in your printer you can adjust.
Your best bet is to e-mail Family History Support: fhdfhsup@ldschurch.org

No, this is a no-no. *Never* use the HP on an Epson. I have the Epson
Stylus 800 and am using the" Epson Compatible setting" for the PAF and it
works fine. Use the Cut sheet setting, not the continuous. Then in the
configuration on PAF turn the form feed off since you do not want to auto
feed a sheet in but it will eject a sheet when it reaches the cut feed.
If you created an entry for epson stylus settings delete it. PAF 2.31 and
3.0 has a setting for "All compatible Epson" settings as is. If you have
any other printer and nothing seems to work Use Epson compatible, since
all IBM printers were set up using the Epson standards.
As for condensed settings , it will only work when you use it for
printing your own style reports in the Focus and Design area (which I
have done). The other group and pedigree sheets will print normal mode.
If this is what you were trying to do for the latter part this is why it
messed up. The manual should explain this if you read the instructions
right. Are you sure you didn't change the ALT codes to print bigger
instead of smaller. If all else fails just re-install the program and
re-select for Epson Compatible setting and don't change any coding.
If it still will not set, go into the control panel to reinstall windows
95 settings for the epson printer (if you delete the original and install
it over again).
Hope this helps.
