Subject: [PAF] New subscriber with a problem.
Greetings.
I am excited to join this listserv as a new subscriber. My name is Mary
Helen Waggoner from Columbus, Mississippi, a long way from most of you.
I am and have been a librarian for 30 years, presently as a Director of
a library system of 10 libraries in the NE part of MS. For the past
10-15 years, I have slowly been working on lineage and family trees.
Now for the problem. I have put my father's line on PAF with the Dos
version 3.0. It needs cleaning up but most of it has been done. I have
been using an IBM 486 bought about 8 years ago. My new Gateway Windows
98, 350mhz Pentium should arrive tomorrow. Can I load my 3.0 disc onto
the new machine?. Will my backup of DOS load into PAF?. The DOS files
won't download into Windows 98 will they? Can anyone help?
In 1995, I had the original version of PAF, and tried to use my backup
of it to load into my new 3.0. At that time, I had both parents lines
on computer but it wouldn't load into the new 3.0. so I had to input the
names again. I don't want to have to do it again, but guess I probably
will have to.
Thanks for your help.
Mary Helen Waggoner

I had no problem loading my PAF 3.0 into my new Windows 98. Just make sure
you either make a Gedcom or a backup disk from your old machine. I made a
gedcom and it loaded also very fast and easy.

Subject: Re: [PAF] New subscriber with a problem.
Greetings Helen from Mississippi, This is Dick from Texas, not so far
away, although I am really a displaced (thankfully) Californian.
Here is what to do.
1. First make sure the database is OK and check the file size, by
opening PAF3 on the old computer, and type "Y" for the utility menu.
First arrow down to Display File Statistics", and note if the file size
is inder 1,400,000 bytes. Next arrow back up to the "Scan File for
Problems" to check the data. If the database is ok, go to #2, if not
contact me and I will assist further.
2. Now put a new formatted diskette in the A:.
Next, if the file was smaller than 1,400,000 bytes, go to dos and type
the command:
COPY C:\PAF3\DATA\*.PAF A: and press enter. This will copy the paf
database from the hard drive to the diskette in the A:
If the file was larger than 1,400,000 bytes then Open PAF3 again, and
use F3-Make Backup as you exit. The backup file is much smaller than
the paf3 database.
3. You need to make copies of any of the other paf datafiles that are on
the hard drive.
Your PAF3 database has a name. You see it when you open PAF3 and select
the file to open. Lets us suppose that you named your paf3 database
HELEN. Y\The file name is HELEN.PAF and most of the other files we
are concerned with also start with HELEN. Using the dos copy command,
from the C:\PAF3> prompt, type
COPY HELEN.* A: If the computer says the disk is full, put in a new
diskette.
Finally, if you have ever made custom reports, copy the Reports.dat file
to the A:
Now you should have all of the important files that PAF3 has for your
database.
If you have more than one PAF3 database, you will need to repeate steps
2 and 3 (except only copy ther reports.dat file once) for each paf3
database.
4. Use the install pogram on your PAF3.0M disk to install the PAF
program on the new machine. Next, using the windows Explorer program
(in Win 95 - Right click on the start button and then click on Explorer)
go to the PAF3 folder, and click on the + in front of PAF3, then click
on the DATA folder. Copy the PAF3 database(s) from the floppy disk into
this folder. In our example this is called HELEN.PAF. If there were
other PAF3 databases you saved, copy them.
Next click back onto the PAF3 folder, and then copy all of the rest of
the files on the diskette to that folder.
5. IF the HELEN.PAF database was larger than 1,400,000 bytes, and you
made a backup copy, then open the PAF3 program on the new computer, and
in the Select File To Open window, choose R for Restore file. The text
box shown below appears, select F6 to list files, and then choose your
file and then press F1.
RESTORE A FILE FROM A BACKUP COPY
- -----------------------------------------------------------
Drive\Directory to restore from: A:
Name of file to restore:
Drive\Directory to restore to: C:\PAF3\DATA
- -----------------------------------------------------------
Esc=Cancel F1=Continue F6=List Files Alt+H=Help
This should work. I have seen an occasion where it did not work, and we
had to first create a new PAF3 database with the same name, and then
Restore worked.
I know this is much more detailed than just restoring a backup copy of
your PAF database. Most PAF users do not know of the other datafiles
that PAF3 makes. They are not backed up in the backup procedure, and if
they were important to you, just restoring a backup or just copying the
PAF3 database to the new computer will leave them behind on the old
computer, which may cause you to loose some information, such as your
focus lists, and some of the changes you made to any record that has an
Ancestral File number.
I hope this helps you, and any one else on the PAF list. You might want
to save this info for the future. Dick

The optimistic reports about PAF 3.0 and Windows 98 are that they work
together without any real problems. If your PAF file is small enough to fit
on a floppy you can just copy the file to a floppy and then copy it to your
new computer. A backup file should work since you will be using a backup from
PAF 3.0 to restore to PAF 3.0.

Your problem here was that you were using a backup from PAF 2.31 (or was it
earlier than that?) and trying to restore it to a PAF 3.0 file. There was a
big change in PAF 3.0 and backups from any PAF 2.x version would not work.
You could have used a GEDCOM file from PAF 2.31 and imported it into PAF 3.0.
If you have a problem this time, give the details of what you did and let
someone on the list try to help you before you retype all the records.
Good luck,
Mary Lou Harline
