Subject: [PAF] [Fwd: Articles of Faith]

This was just sent to me and thought that everyone would like a look at
the apathetic view point of that which we all take very seriously and
love to do.

GENEALOGISTS THIRTEEN ARTICLES OF "NO" FAITH

	1. We believe in Aunt Clara, the eternal pursuer of our genealogy, in
the tradition that allows to "let Aunt Clara do it, " and in her
persistence in supplying us with Xerox copies.

	2. We believe that men will be excused from their own genealogy if
they are earning a living or just to busy.

	3. We hope that through the temple attendance of others, all mankind
	may be saved.

	4. We believe the first principles of genealogy are: first, faith that
someone else will do it; second, repentance through maintained
ignorance; third, baptism by immersion in so many other things that we
don't have time anyway; fourth, laying on of excuses for the gift of
	self justification.

	5. We believe that a man must be a born genealogist or he will never
have the ability to perform the functions of record keeping or any
	research thereof.

	6. We believe in following the same organization that existed before
the correlation program; namely.... don't try to improve the system,
don't take training courses, don't form a family organization, etc.

	7. We believe in the gift of time.... time for T.V., time for clubs,
time for movies, time for parties, etc.

	8. We believe the Handbook for Genealogy and Temple Work to be the
word of the church as far as it is translated correctly. We also have
our doubts about the genealogy lesson manuals.

	9. We believe nothing that the Ward committee has revealed, and we
doubt that it will yet reveal any great or important things we do not
	already know.

	10. We believe in the literal gathering of names out of library books
only, and that pedigrees can be built upon this theoretical
foundation; that all our pedigree sheets will be renewed automatically
to paradisaical correctness just as though real, honest research had
	been done.

	11. We claim the privilege of interpreting all family traditions and
printed histories to suit our own conveniences, and we allow all men
the same privilege- let them assume who, where, or what they may be.

	12. We believe in being subject to discouragement, lack of
confidence, and busy schedules; and ignoring, resisting and
	withstanding the law.

	13. We believe in being lazy, and in not supporting genealogy work
(which would result in good to all men); indeed, we may say that we
follow the lines of least resistance; we hope all things, but we do
nothing, we have not endured anything, and we do not expect to be able
	to endure anything.
If there is any approved way to get out of these responsibilities, we
 	seek after these things.

Joan, I can easily think of thee ways of doing what you want.

1. The best way that I know of, is to split off or make a copy of a
database for PAF3 is to make an export file of all data, and then import
it back into a new PAF3 database named "interim" then delete the
individuals that you do not want. After the deletions, make a new
export, and then import them into a new PAF3 database called "bogus".
This final file will be smaller than the interim file. You can the
delete the inerum file.

Next delete the individuals that you do not want in the original PAF3
datbase, and then make an export of all data, and then make a new file
wityh the records that you exported. This new file will be smaller than
your original.

2. An other way is to import the first export (the one used to make the
"interim" database) into PAF2.31 and to use a program called PafSplit
by Ann Turner. This must be purchased, unless you find a friend that has
it on their computer and is willing to use it to split the database.
PafSplit will take cousins, second cousins, third cousins. ect. The
only problem with using PAF2.31 is that the notes/sources files
formatted in PAF3 style will all end up in the old style note pad, and
this may cause more work to fix than the double export method that I
described first.

3. Another option is to import PAF3 data into another program, like
Ultimate Family Tree, Legacy, or The Master Genealogist, and using their
splitting software to create the new database(s). These programs will
probably not destroy your source notes. Demo copies of Legacy, and
probably UFT might be found on the web pages for the Software vendor.
The demo is free, and can be discarded after you are through.

Here are two methods to use (there are probably several more):
1. Use the parent link "disproved" where the good data ends and the bogus
line starts. Then add the link to the real parents with the "biological"
link. For instance, if you have John Smith's parents as David Smith and Jane
Black and you find that is incorrect, change the parent link for John Smith to
"disproved" and then all the real parents. You will have all the records
still in your file, but the error will show.

2. Create a GEDCOM file, and after selecting the ancestors of the person(s)
where the bogus line begins, select the other families or individuals using
your paper copies of family group sheets as guides if you can't recognize them
in the left screen of the GEDCOM select screen.
Keep a record of the RINs and in the Delete "What do you want to delete?"
box, choose "Delete Range of Individuals" to delete all the bogus records from
your file. (Remember a backup before doing this procedure.)
