I'm on the list via digest mode, and will reply to two things...

Verily, paf-digest did write:

I'm currently battling a FTM (for windows, so I guess it's FTW) GEDCOM
import problem as well. I found a copy of a program called GEDCHK
vers. 0.8 that the church wrote, but doesn't support. The reporting
details areas for errors, but I have to warn you that it's somewhat
cryptic, with SOME clear info, but some fairly extensive knowledge of
the GEDCOM grammar rules is needed to use it.

See the following address for gedchk and also a gedcom 5.5 spec.
ftp://gedcom.org/pub/genealogy/gedcom/

For me it isolated the areas that are likely to fail for GEDCOM
import. (In my instance, after 3.0 failed, I tried 2.31...which
failed as well.) PAF 2.31 would truncate stuff anyway, as it had a
field length limitation on many fields.

I have fixed some of my problems by hand editing the
GEDCOM file, I've mapped out (via some unix tools) what other tags are
in the gedcom file that are different from a PAF 3.0 created GEDCOM
file (extra tags, some pretty strange...).

I also came across a tool called GIM (Genealogy Information Manager),
which is an interesting tool. It's made as a PAF type of tool, but
it's a lot more "lenient" in accepting foreign GEDCOM files, and
reporting errors as appropriate. (FTM/FTW put in CRCRLF sequences at
the end of each line, which showed up as musical notes in EDIT!)
Anyway, it's a DOS based program and has some nice features that I
haven't explored yet. It has a 1 year trial period, with a cost of
$20. It's pretty slick in that it will take in "foreign" gedcom files
and apparently turn weird tagged stuff into NOTES!!!! YES! The
creators have done extensive work to assure that you can take GEDCOM
output from this program for Temple Ready, and have it WORK in Temple
Ready!

Anyway, the web address is:
http://www.mindspring.com/~dblaine/gimhome.html

Just be careful to get 3.18 version and not 3.17 (3.18 is just
released). It has an SQL type search capability, a robust coloring
scheme (somewhat limited, but should accomodate most people, and many
other features.)

Jeanne,

RDF didn't come with PAF 3.0. However, there's nothing to keep it
from working with PAF 3.0 as a separate utility. Most of the
capability of RDF was incorporated into PAF 3.0 as the SOURCE
organizer. MUCH more intuitive, I feel! You should copy the RDF
program from the C:\PAF area (usually) to C:\PAF3 area (usually) (the
directories can be different for your own computer setup.

I'm surprised that the PAF directory was taken out of the path, which
would have allowed you to find that program should you type it
elsewhere. But it's also on your floppies that it was distributed on
(2.31) if you want to go that route.

Justin

Subject: [PAF] Is there anybody who has access to the inner sanctum...

I've sent a message to the PAF support people a week ago regarding the
problem I was having with GEDCOM files from FTM (FTW), and got a
message back earlier this week. I was told my message was being
passed to the programmers there in the FHD. Not hearing anything, I
attempted to get ahold of one of them. Apparently, the front line
support person has to go to one person and rely on them to talk to the
programmers. Having been a computer support/programmer person before,
I know how much value people who play good interference is to my
customers (so I can get work done as a programmer).

However, the liason person who is supposed to pass messages back and
forth is not doing that function (too busy, I'm told).

So, does anybody here on the list have access to the inner sanctum of
the programmers there at the Family History Dept? (is there more than 1?
- - A rumor I heard awhile back).

I'd just like to get ahold of someone who can answer very detailed
questions about GEDCOM rules and PAF 3.0's interpretation of the
rules, and also the internal workings of PAF 3.0. I suppose I could
always sign a non-disclosure agreement, and try to go that route....
but I'd like to avoid that.

Can any kind person please slip a note through the garrison? :-)

Justin

Have you done a restore from the recycle bin? That would take care of the
problem.

If not, what version were you using. I have the 2.31 version still on my
computer and still have the earlier versions 2.0 and 2.2.

I had already cleared the recycle bin before I realized that I had deleted the
RDF program. I had used it with 2.31, but also the previous versions too. I
it use to index my filing cabinet to keep from repeating research on states
and persons.

I got a new computer and all of this happened when I transferred my files to
the new one. My old computer was antiquated, used 5" disks so had to convert
those to 3" etc.
