Concerning the FTW files vs GEDCOM,I thank all of you for your suggestions.
They have sent me a GEDCOM file now. I'm going to try some other
suggestions just out of curiosity. Thank goodness for PAF and you great
people. They thought PAF3 should except FTM files. Linda

I can't open it either. Is this file in base 64?

I don't have access to my regular computer with the real list, but I hope that
is correct. I haven't heard that she has changed her address.

One way I can use Focus and a Custom Report in my research is o find all the
records in my database with the births or christenings or marriages in the
same place. Many of my records are inherited from family members or from the
old LDS Archives where the family group sheets gave some sources in rather
cryptic form. I feel it necessary to check the records. Since many are New
England families, one of the first places to check is the book of the town
vital records.

I can use Focus to search for the town. I'll use Scituate, Plymouth,
Massachusestts as an example. In PAF 3.0M, I first tried match any data with
the search data being Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. I put this
information in the fields for brithplace, christening place, death place,
burial place, and marriage place. I got over 600 replies and realized that it
included everyone with Massachusetts in those fields. I tried again and put
only Sciutate in the search fields.
The name list was displayed with the results of the Focus search. An
advantage of PAF 3.0M is that the results are displayed as a name list with
the names on the left and details of the highlighted individual on the right.
The names selected by Focus have the little triangle in front of the name. You
may not see any triangles on the first screen. You can use page up and page
down to see other names.
I press V to see only the names on the Focus list. Then I can highlight a
name and press V to see other records with the same surname to see if anyone
was not added to the list because I did not have any place name in that
record.
My database is too big to go though all the names looking for "missing
persons," but by going back and forth on View Selected/All I can see if any
others should be added to the Focus list and add them as individuals.
Then save the focus list and give it a name.
As far as the report is concerned:
I could probably use just the regular name list. However, I created a
custom list and included the birth/christening place and a full
birth/christening date. This gave me a list that I could then take to the
library, or use with a CD of the vital records to check what I had.
I probably should have added death/burial dates and places to this list.
When I checked the vital records of Scituate I did find why the Ancestral File
has two different couples as parents of my Ruth Bryant. Two girls of the same
name were born in that town about 5 years apart. That means more records are
needed to find the true parents, but this was a start.

I would appreciate suggestions on how to improve this procedure.
