I love the PAF 3 and Companion,go ahead and try it. I am getting ready to
use it with the update of GenBook to print a family history. I wouldn't go
back to the old versions. This is my 3rd update. Linda

I like it too. I don't want to go back either--currently I'm
updating my file and converting my notes to sources. I'm making good
progress. I try to do a little every day but some days are better
than others. I've taken some of the list members' advice and now I'm
keeping 3 backup disks instead of just one like I had been doing.

My advice to the gentleman who was leery of going to PAF3 is: Keep
your 2.31 data but do try the PAF3. If your PC will handle both,
PAF3 won't get rid of any previous versions of PAF. I would run both
and compare. I think you'll like 3.0.

Silly me has agreed to teach a class next week on the Focus feature in
PAF 3.0 and on Custom Designed Reports in PAF 3.0. I would welcome your
comments on how you use these features to assist research efforts.

I have a handy printout I could send to you. Just let me know if you like
to try it. Or if your lucky enough Joan Lowrey has done a thorough guide
on this subject. She is on this list.

Hi Joan!!

The printout is in Word format. I could send it as an attached file to
the message if you like. It's about a 4 page easy to follow guide. I;m
still using mine for little stuff. There are so many possibilities for
this gem of a program. Joan also has some samples listed in her guide.

HTH (Hope this helps)

Dear sister Lowrey...when I was a family history missionary I used your =
manual for Paf 2.31 as a text in the teaching lab. I was wondering if =
you have done anything like that for PAF 3.0 and if so where is it =
available. Would appreciate hearing from you. Noel E. Crapo

Family History Support has a new e-mail address. It is

FHDFHSup@ldschurch.org

Everyone who finds bugs in PAF 3.0m, or has suggestions or comments --
PLEASE SEND THEM IN!!!!!

The more people they hear from, and the more problems that are reported,
the more we might have a chance of another upgrade. From what I hear, =
those
who make the decisions think it's fine the way it is. If you don't, LET
THEM HEAR FROM YOU!!!!!

Hello brother Crapo!

Yes, I remember you, and that you had ordered my book. I am glad to hear
you made good use of it. I am still working on my PAF 3.0 book. It's a
complete re-write, or course, and this time I am adding a lot of Windows
techniques, copying PAF data to e-mail, etc, so it's taking a while.

I'll be happy to e-mail you when it is ready. And thank you for the support!

thought they had Family Tree Maker. They are sure they sent GEDCOMS,but I
think this must be backups. Anyway I can't open them in PAF 3,WordPerfect

Subject: Re: [PAF] Focus and Design report

here is the text format for any of you that would like to try it. This is
the v2.31. Version 3.0 is just slightly different, but achieves the same
results.

Tom
**************************
	Focus & Design Reports V2.31

What is the purpose of Focus and Design report? You could pool your data
into a database to save as a GEDCOM, or view what records you have in the
file. A person could make a report printout designed to their liking, or
save to a disk to share with others.

To begin, find the Facts & Fun menu selection. Choose option 7. Or for
those that use a mouse click on focus, or using a hot key press on U.

The PAF program comes with two sample report displays. You don't have to
use these. Instead a person could delete or move them elsewhere on the
disk drive. To add a report highlight on add. You may in add as many
reports designs that you like. This is an advantageous point of view to
use different data to different needs.

>From the menu, you could add or remove any/all data to a focus list.
With one option there is a difference. In the ancestor selection you get
just that: ancestors only. On the GIE ancestral option, all the family
groups on direct lines comes up.

The focus can be matched by exact fields that are requested or on any
fields. When using surname search, you could specify up to five variant
spellings, or as five different names. on places up to 16 items.

EXAMPLE: Smith, Smyth, Schmidt, Schmid, Smythe
          Doe, Jones, Adams, Lee, Johnson

There is an option to match by note qualifier. One example is a focused
burial list using cemetery as a key word. This could serve as a check-off
list of cemeteries you visited.

To design your report, choose design/print reports. Choose Add. You will
have space up to 2 lines for report title, 2 lines for information
description, and up to 7 lines for displayed data. To turn on/off the
field number pop-up menu press the F3 key. This aids the designer how
they want to setup the report.

To copy the same report, but use the fields differently, choose copy.
Edit any criteria you want to change in the copied version. Then choose
F1 key to save the new report.

The print size are as follows:

		(N)ormal = 10 cpi = 79 cp line
         	(E)lite = 12 cpi = 90 cp line
         	(C)ompressed = 17 cpi = 128 cp line
         	(T)iny = 20 cpi = 150 cp line
Page width depends on how much data could fit onto a page. Also whether
its on single, continous, or legal sheets. Press Alt+H keys for help in
setting up or you could experiment on your own.

Field fill-in is usually a "blank" or ".". You could substitute a hyphen
(-) or an underscore (_), (best for making worksheet to write in data).
To separate data in between, use one line with 27 (field number for
dashes) with x's across. To use a *, # or anything else, use that across
the line for at the beginning text line.

Last, you need to find out how you are going to sort the report by. If
you want the same report 5 times, but on different sorts, each report
will be done by editing the sort by code. All you do is edit the sort by
number, then press F1 key to save, then print the report.

For a creative use of multi-line setup, look up the article by Alma
Greenwood in the Fall 1992 issue of Genealogical Computing magazine. This
was reported having a great look.

In saving the focus list to disk, you name it up to 40 characters in
length (as opposed to DOS files 8 character length). A one hundred focus
list limitation is allowed. Each focus list is a separate file.

In retrieving a focus list, the first 15 lists are displayed (if any). If
you have 100, scroll down the list to choose an item to retrieve and
press F1 to accept.

Some possible focus lists one might like to have are: no sex id list,
cemetery/burial list, no county list, no surname list, no death date
list, no birth date list, direct line who are/not in Ancestral File base.

One word of advice. If you have set the "Match Names & Positions" to yes
(from the configuration setup) it may affect your focus list. If it is
set to no, there will be no problems.

When one becomes familiar with designing reports, it becomes a powerful
tool to aid the genealogist in their quest and requests on data. No other
genealogical program comes close than the PAF program.

Subject: [PAF] FTW verses GED

You can only open FTW files with Family Tree Maker. They did not send
you GEDCOM files, but just a copy of their database. They have can make
you a GEDCOM in which ever version of PAF that you may have they just
haven't yet. Just ask them to try again and this time select EXPORT and
select whatever version of PAF that you currently have. So many people
have been duped into buying Family Tree Maker they may not be aware
that just copying the database is not the same as creating a GEDCOM. It
is nice that they are willing to share.
Happy Hunting!

FTW is Familytreemaker for windows. And some versions of FTW's
GEDCOMfiles do end in FTW. :( Make a copy of the file, and change the
extension on the copy from .ftw to .ged and see if it works. If not,
your next step depends on how well you know the senders.

If they're well known to you, you can be as rude as you feel you
can pull off when you tell them to "READ THE @#$%^& CHOICES before you
make one." GEDCOM is an option, and few people ever seem to see it, even
though there are only two choices. (g)

If they're strangers, tell 'em you must have an older version because you
can't import these, yours wants a .ged file; "On my version, it's under
file:GEDCOM:40, but I don't know where you'd find it."

Good luck.

Hi Linda,

I've been told that the Adobe Acrobat program can read those
FTW files. Don't know if that's true or not, but since the
program is free for downloading off the internet you might
want to check it out.

Also, the file may very well be a GEDCOM file, and just be
misnamed. You can go into File Manager and rename the tag
on the file from .ftw to .ged. Then see if your PAF 3.0 can
import it. I've had to do this a number of times. Just a
suggestion.

PAF GEDCOM and everything worked fine. Hope this helps.
