Subject: [PAF] Alt-Q

I accidently hit Alt-Q instead of Alt-A and it deleted *everything* in
the Note screen. (Not just the one note, but the !tagged one, the blank
line, the next paragraph without a tag, the blank line that followed it,
AND the single line I wanted to delete.

Wish I'd known that when I was TRYING to delete an entire note.

Also, I notice that occasionally when I am typing in a note, it fails to
word-wrap, but continues on off the right side of the screen a number of
spaces, after which it generally deletes itself, and I get to retype the
note. I see no pattern to when this happens (i.e., every 3rd time I open
NOTES, every time I've deleted something, every time I've backspaced
something out, everytime I use the word "and").

These still applicable to 3.0m?

Family History Support has a new e-mail address. It is

FHDFHSup@ldschurch.org

Everyone who finds bugs in PAF 3.0m, or has suggestions or comments --
PLEASE SEND THEM IN!!!!!

The more people they hear from, and the more problems that are reported,
the more we might have a chance of another upgrade. From what I hear, those
who make the decisions think it's fine the way it is. If you don't, LET
THEM HEAR FROM YOU!!!!!

To All:
I was a beta tester for PAF 3.0 and Joan Lowery has my FULL support in
the above plea. For example, I wanted them to make it possible to send
any of the PAF reports to PAF Companion for printing. The response I had
was that it was technically feasable, but not worth the trouble. PAF 3.0
has about 33 reports. PAF Companion prints three of them (beautifully)
and four other reports. My request is that you make a list of the
reports which PAF 3.0 prints which you like and remind them that you want
PAF Companion to do them.
Another problem I have is with the use of the ANSL character set. It
has most of the diacritics for Spanish, French, German and the
Scandinavian languages, but not all of them. It does not support all of
the needs of the eastern european languages and does not even try to
support cyrillic, hebrew, the arab languages or the oriental languages.
It needs to be written to use the Unicode character set.
There are some "minor" problems such as not printing some of the
comments from the sources.

I appreciate Richard's suport and his encouragement to all of you to send
in your bug reports, comments etc.

I have made it a habit, as soon as I see something not working right, to
immediately switch to my e-mail program, type it up and sent it, right on
the spot. Don't wait till later, but DO be sure it is their fault and not
yours.

As to the ANSEL character set: I had trouble when I created a GENBOOK
report from PAF 3.0m. All my German diacritics were wrong, and I had to do
a lot of search & replace and change them. I was not happy. I had used many
steps and many programs to arrive at that report and didn't know where the
problem occurred so I e-mailed Steve Cannon and Rex Clement with this list
of what I had done:
PAF 2.31 data to a GEDCOM file.
	Ran GEDWRAP on it.
Imported new GEDCOM created by GEDWRAP into PAF 3.0.
Ran PAF-Pal on the PAF 3.0 data, changing all the diphthongs in my German
names and places to umlauts (Mueller to Müller, Wuerttemberg to
Württemberg, etc.) (works great!)
Ran GEN-BOOK 7.0 for PAF 3.0 on the changed PAF 3.0 data.
Opened the GEN-BOOK report in WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows.

As far as I knew, the problem could have occurred anywhere along the way.
Steve Cannon responded that PAF is the only program left that still uses
the ANSEL character set. He said PAF-Pal wasn't at fault. Maybe GEN-BOOK
wasn't reading it correctly. I e-mailed Rex, he found the problem, and has
now fixed it.

If you get this problem after creating a GEN-BOOK report, contact Rex
before you spend a lot of time trying to fix them.

Joan and all you Paffers, may I suggest sharing them with the group , I am
aware of about a dozen people that have similar problems as described below.

To PAF support and all ,
The last year+ i have been busy corresponding and talking to PAF support
about the bugs in PAF 3.0 and 3.0m and on most questions i have not
received a satisfactory answer.
Before I give you the list I want to make clear that I love the program .
In my opinion there is no easier program to use . I have tried several
others and while they have options that are helpfull , PAF has the
simpliest and fastest way of data entry. I have taught several PAF classes
and its amazing how many people that use other programs attend these
classes and say something like "I will use PAF for my data entry and my
other program to print my special reports".

This past winter I have undertaken a project that involved typing in
allmost 10.000 names and have several suggestions and found some bugs .

1;In focus list you cannot focus on or exclude the abbreviations (Abt. Est.
Cal.)
2;Would like to see a search option for finding spouses with same surnames.
ie: all Jones' married to Smith's.
3; When rearranging children in a family with a second spouse , the program
will jump back to the first spouse. Very anoying.
4; When adding a child to a family and realizing that you made a mistake ,
"esc." will still put that child still into that family. It does not give
you a option to stop or erase that child untill you delete it later.
5; PAF and a large data file does not deal well with slower computers and
with any computer under 8 ram , it locks up or will give a DOS error. I
have been told don't use it on anything slower than a pentium if your data
file is over 2000 names.
6; PAF does not deal well with "keeping track" of what clusters it uses on
your harddrive. Frequent scandisk and defrags are a must and then you have
to be aware of lost data. (This was explained to me by a computer expert so
don't ask me the what and why).
It was explained to me that this was the cause off me losing all people
with the first name "Antoon" and other people getting "unlinked" from
spouses or parents .
In another case it would not keep/save the third place field in the death
of a individual . Three times in a row I would re-enter the place, exit the
program and the place was gone when opening the program . Not untill I
deleted the individual completely and re-entered all info was it accepted
into the program.
At other times the program would give a DOS error and return to windows
when pressing F1 in the edit screen.

Let's get together on this and hope that as a group we can make a difference.
                             Groetjes to all...........Peter!!!!!!

Excellent bug list, Peter! I would like to add one.

7. You can focus on a particular source title, but when attempting
to produce a report, the focus list prints out the first source
(which may or may not be the source you wanted).

Here is a bug that support has ordered a fix on. When typing 24
charactures or less into the birthplace field the Pedigree Chart will
print Death: even if it is empty. This is OK. When you put 25 or more
charactures into the birthplace field the Pedigree Chart will print
Burial: and drop the Death: A programmer found this bug when working on
another problem for me.

Subject: [PAF] Re: PAF 2.31 vs deskjet 690 series printers

While I have be using PAF 2.31 for several years, I recently purchased a
DeskJet 692C printer. In several efforts to print reports from the PAF file,
all came through the printer as though the page size/print (font) etc. had all
been doubled.

I contacted the tech rep for DeskJet and was told that DeskJet is "programed
for windows based programs" and that as PAF is a DOS based program, PAF must
be modified to set the correct font for the printing of reports.

I admit to being "computer dumb" - that is to say I can follow the prompts,
read the menu and enter data in a open file. However, I have no knowledge as
to how to adjust the files in the PAF program to allow the printing on this
printer. Can you provide any guidance or point of contact for guidance to
solve this problem.

I really do not want to give up my PAF, nor do I care for what I know of the
3.0 version. But is that the answer?

Thank you so kindly for your consideration.

I had my trusty laptop at the FHC the other day, trying to finish
inputting a census. A couple, regular patrons, barely-retired college
profs, stopped to chat about genealogy programs, asking questions about
which was better than what.

They have UFT. The lady at the next microfilm reader uses BK and FTW,
but didn't have either of them on her laptop. I commented that given HER
field she'd probably be very happy with TMG, but that I hated the busy
screen with all the different colored boxes and whatnot I saw on the
demo. Turns out that's what they dislike about UFT.

So, I opened PAF3, and they were thrilled! Called SLC from the FHC's
phone, and happily paid the quarter for the phone call, to order it.
They loved the simplicity and clean look of the pedigree screen, they
even loved the screen where you select which database to open!

Hoorah for our side. (g)

With Hewlett Packard printer such as the 690C series, I've found out that
the Deskjet 500 series drivers works to get around this. My Brother has
the same problem with the 693C printer and I went in to adjust to the 500
series and it works fine for printing out under DOS printing.

Other than than if it doesn't work there, under 2.31 version you can
specify Epson cut sheet driver if non e of the above works. I've heard
that Epson is the universal default since all other printers can emulate
this.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ray,

I have a friend who had the same problem. Do you have windows on
your computer, either version 3.1 or 95? She got the ancestral
quest program which is a windows program.. It shares the same files
with Paf 2.31 and gives you some extra windows functions too. She
could print fromAncestral Quest and still do her entering in Paf 2.31.

However, I switched to Paf 3.0 and I love it. I have not experienced
any of the problems that I have seen mentioned in the "bugs" series.
I don't like the sources instead of the notes sections for
documentation because you can't view them all at once as you can with
the notes. So I just use the notes the same way for my documentation
as I did in Paf 2.31 until they come up with a way to view all the
sources easily. And even my HP 722C printer works with Paf 3.0.

Good Luck,
Alice Harris

Just thought I'd ask how you did it.
