This appeared in our local paper and thought I pass along. It doesn't
have a thing to do with PAF directly, only family. Thought it was worth a
smile for the day.

Tom
*********************
10 Commandments for reunions

1) Thou shalt not forget ordinary manners or common civility.

2) Thou shalt tolerate tiresome relatives -- at least for a little while.

3) thou shalt not play footsie with a distant cousin or a cousin's
spouse.

4) Thou shalt not snipe and carp about a reunion's lack of organization.

5) Thou shalt heap spontaneous praise upon the reunion organizer.

6) thou shalt not talk about everything under the sun. Steer clear of
such topics as abortion rights.

7) Parents shalt not use intimate details of their kids' lives as
conversational fodder.

8) Thou shalt not reveal devastating family secrets.

9) Thou shalt not publicly criticize the manners or behavior of any child
not belonging to you.

10) Thou shalt flatter thy kinfolk -- falsely or not.

Is it my imagination or is PAF 2.x only focussing on the last two digits
of a year?

I did a FOCUS to find someone born in 1848, and got a couple dozen 1948s,
two 1748s and four 1848s.

Then I was looking for a list of everyone born in 1977, and again, I got
1777, 1877 AND 1977.

I don't remember it doing that ... but then, I usually have more info
which narrows it down to one or two possibles.

Does PAF 3.0 do the same thing?

Puzzled,
	Cheryl

Thanks for posting them, Tom, and I hope you don't mind if I add some Why

If you wanted to be huge and ended up small, you'll feel badly. One of
my reunions hit a peak of 800 its second year and has since dwindled to
under 50.

Not to mention, making mailing *this* year's flyers easier.

> 3) Announce the reunion well in advance.

Two months isn't enough time for many people to get leave; some folks
have to put in for their vacation time in January/February. Give them at
least a year's notice.

> 4) Negotiate early for good rates on blocks of rooms in hotels.

One of my groups always meets in a hotel, and we book 2 yrs in advance.

> 5) Send out a mailing of hotel and activities information. Ask for RSVPs.

F'instance, one of our reunions was to be held at a hotel we'd never
heard of for a price we considered high for the locale. Right across the
street was a chain hotel at half the cost.

Activities, one of our has a day activity which is sometimes quite
"active" ... they climbed a mountain one year, and toured a battlefield
another. Knowing in advance meant the people with mobility problems
could make alternate plans.

Include maps! Include maps YOU'D want to drive with. "Go out the old
road quite a ways, and if you miss he first turnoff, take the tunnel" is
not a decent set of directions. Nor is "Turn just before the old Turkey
plant."

> 6) Have games and sporting events for children. Everyone will have a
> better time.

If you can't pull that off, see if you can pay the older ones to herd the
littler ones. Or at least watch 'em while you show a rental movie in
another room.

> 7) Have backup plans in case of bad weather or other emergencies.

And there will BE bad weather and emergencies. Even if the backup plan
for rain is simply an organized gab-fest, it goes over better if you
can say "Great! I was wondering how we'd work this in!" One of the backup
plans should be someone left at the hotel and someone with the group with a
cell-phone, so stragglers can be rounded up.

> 8) Keep records of expenses to help plan the next reunion.

And make sure your suppliers give you an ITEMIZED bill, so when someone
wants an audit, or wants to check why the banquet costs $18 a head and
last time the banquet was only $12, you can point out that last time you
had BBQ Chicken and this time it's prime rib.

> 9) Provide reunion mementos: a family photo or video, T-shirts, a
> collection of recipes.

It fosters a sense of unity.

> 10) At the end, do an evaluation to see what participants thought of the
> place and the activities.

People can be very helpful with ideas you never thought of -- or thought
no one would want. Also, if you include the evaluation sheet in the
WELCOME packet, they know in advance they'll get a chance to speak their
piece so the on-going grouse will reduce. (g)

One additional thought: the state tourism board and often local Chambers
of Commerce will be happy to pass out freebies for that WELCOME packet.
And, a website for the reunion makes an impression on the younger crowd.

Joan,

I had found the options that you metion but they do not change the default
setting which was my question. Do you know how to change the default??

In fact changing the font does not change the font when printing from Word97.

Robin,

Sorry I didn't reply when I first received this. I wasn't clear on your
question. But I think you are referring to the Register Report only. Is
this correct?

When I change the font and font size and print any of the other reports,
they are changed on the report (except the FGR, which does not accept a
change in font size).

But when the register report is generated and saved to your word processor,
then it comes up in the default font for the word processor (not what you
have select in the Companion). You can change it in teh word processor if
you want another font.

Is this what you are referring to?

At the urging of other members of the household, who shall remain
nameless (but their name goes FIRST on a FGS!), I moved huge amounts of
data, including 12 separate PAF databases, from floppies to a ZIPDISK.
As I moved stuff, I deleted it from the floppies, and threw away about
half of them (who needed 40 DS/DD 5 1/4 floppies?).

Two months later, the ZIPDISK "died" -- I was unable to access ANY file
on the disc except the READMEs that are factory installed.

We finally "recovered" *most* of the data and I am STILL in the process
of identifying specific files. 85 Meg worth of specific files. And if
anyone can tell me why every single reptitl2.dat file is corrupted, I
could stash that away for future reference too. Today I spent the
afternoon UNDEL the 40 discs I didn't throw away.

I have two more ZIPDISKs dedicated to specific projects, but I'm afraid
to even try to access them!

This was a brand-new, peeled off the shrinkwrap seconds before I started
moving files disc.

I have used several ways depending how many people I have new AFN for.
I have assumed that you are talking about PAF 3.0.

You can import and merge the GEDCOM file you got from Ancestral File
and the AFN will be moved to the person when you merge.
You can export a small GEDCOM file for the person in question. Using
your text editor, add the line 1 AFN XXX-XXXX (where XXX-XXXX is the AFN you
found) to the person's data. Then import the changed small GEDCOM back to your
data and merge the p
erson. The AFN will be moved to the correct place and the
extra person will be deleted.
If you have a LOT of people, export the whole file and add the line
above to each person. The GEDCOM ID will be the same as the RIN. Then import
into a new data base and your file will have the new AFNs.

If you download the information from the Ancestral File and import it into

I recently upgraded to PAF 3.0 and PAF Companion; having trouble doing what I
call "focus lists" - once I learned how to do it on the old version, I guess I
cannot get it out of my head! What I want to do is to make a list to print
out and take with me for (as an example): all my ancestors in Pennsylvania.
Try as I might to walk myself through the manual - I just cannot get this
thing done. Where do I go wrong?

Subject: Re: [PAF] [Fwd: "Focus Lists"]

To get a Focus List of all your ancestors in Pennsylvania:

PAF 3.0's Focus has an option to select "Ancestors", but it doesn't select
only those who appear on the pedigree chart, as PAF 2.x did. (This is very
unfortunate, as Ancestors only was a very useful option.) When you choose
"Ancestors" in PAF 3.0, you get all the ancestors (to the selected number
of generations), plus all the children of each couple, plus all the spouses
all the selected people had, plus all the spouses of those spouses.

If that's ok with you, here's what to do:

1. In Preferences, answer "N" to "Match names AND fields..."
2. At the Small Pedigree, select focUs.
3. Select Ancestors.
4. Press "2" to chance "Select" to "Unselect."
5. Press "M" Match."
6. You will get a screen with two choices. Choose "Unselect records that
DON'T Match."
7. Press "A" for "All data."
8. In the birth place field, enter Pennsylvania, or PA, however your data is.
9. Press <F1> Match. You will remove everyone who wasn't born in PA, so
you'll have only those who were.
10. Press "P" for "Print."
11. I like to choose "Change Print Destination" and then "Screen" so I can
see if I am getting what I want before I waste paper printing it.
12. When you return to the "FOCUS PRINT" screen, choose Custom Reports.
13. Choose one of the listed reports or "A" to Add a new one of your own
design.
14. Since you are familiar with the old Focus, you can probably do ok from
there on. <F3> gets the first list of codes, and <F3> again gets the second
list. <Esc> closes those lists.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any problems with this.

Charlotte:

The only way to add the AFN to a record in PAF3.0m is to GEDCOM the
record into your database and merge the records. That become a very big
pain if the people in the AF are shown as 'LIVING' with no name but you
can tell that that is Uncle Chuck and have all of the info. Even if you
are GEDCOMing the same record more than once-- the match/merge will not
merge the 2 records with identical AFN because the program is looking at
more than just the AFN. Hope this gets fixed very soon. My database is
almost 100,000 records and it is near impossible to have it clean.

Cheryl, I seem to recall an old addage about "putting all of ones' eggs
into one basket".

I probably would have done the same thing. The problem in keeping all
the "old disks" is that there are now two copies of the same data that
need to be upgraded. How about just using the zip disk as a master
backup copy, and search it for the names you want to work on, kinda like
an index? Then make the changes on the floppies, and then back the
floppy up onto the zip disk?

I curse the pile of disketts I have with numerous databases on them,
(many duplicates or slightly different versions of the same data)
however I love them when the hard disk crashes, which has happened to me
three times. Anyone got a better idea? Dick

Subject: Re: [PAF] [Fwd: "Focus Lists"]

Olive Hoffman wrote "What I want to do is to make a list to print
out and take with me for (as an example): all my ancestors in
Pennsylvania."

Try this: In PAF3.0, select "U" for focus, select "M" for match, select
"Y" for anY-data,
in the "place" fields, type the name of the locality, press F1 to
generate the focus list.
You should put the name of the place in the PLACES Bir, Chr, Mar, Death,
Bur. to check for anyone who started out or ended up in that location.

Repeat this for the various ways to spell/abbreviate the locality, i.e.
PA, Penn. Pennsyl., Pennsylvania. The focus list is added to, that is,
you can add the names found under the spelling Pennsylvania, to the list
of those spelled PA.

You can then print the list. By the way, you could just focus on the
entire database (add-All) and then select "Print", and select "Place
sorted list". Print it to disk, then use a word proceessor to print
just the pages with the locality you desire. This will require some
reformatting experience using your word processor, but it will find all
localitites entered in the database, without you having to worry about
spelling, and which event field searched.

To determine if a particular spelling or abbreviation is used in your
database use the "searcH" feature and type in the spelling desired. If
it is not being used, yoy will get a not found message.

(I used mark, copy, and paste... I am a lazy typist, ALSO be sure to
list the various ways to spell/abbreviate the locality, i.e. PA, Penn.
Pennsyl., Pennsylvania.)

Hope this helps, Dick

Yes, but this is such a PAIN! I have 8000+ people in my PAF 3
files, which I brought in from PAF 2.31. I had all the AFN in the
notes, (before there a place to put such info)., and now, the only
way I can get those AFN's in is to download ALL my names, then
match and merge them - this is really a boo-boo.

Subject: [PAF] HotNotes and LaserPAF

The author of LaserPAF and HotNotes!, Jan Unter, has found PAF 3.0
much more difficult to write software against than was PAF 2.31. It is
true that he hoped to have it out earlier this year, but unexpected bugs
have delayed their release. He has showed me one version of the
HotNotes! In fact, he asked me to help test it last November, but he
simply has not had enough time to finish the project. Like most
programmers he insists that there is only one remaining serious bug in it
and he almost has it fixed.
Last Monday I asked the same question of a mutual friend. Her reply
agrees with the above. He is also trying to earn a living for his family
and remodel his home. He is a very nice man.

Try backing up to a tape drive. This has worked for me for years.
Rotate between two tapes. If one goes bad the other will probably be
just fine. I never backup to disks. To many failures with them. Very
easy to restore with a tape drive. They are also cheap.

The *register* is the quote in my header.

Yes it is the Register to which I am refering.

No that is NOT the case. My default in WP is 12pt. The register comes up in
11pt and Companion is set at 10pt which is the point size in which I need
to print.

Any more ideras anyone? Please. <G>

My default in WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows is 12 pt Times New Roman. The
Register report from the Companion when opened in WordPerfect is in 12 pt
Times New Roman. So it's the same for me. My font in the Companion is set
for 10 pt Arial.

Since it isn't doing that for you, just change your font for the Register
report after you open it in your word processor. (BTW, my header is 18 pt
and 24 pt.)
