Yes, it will work. You can e-mail the GEDCOM file to a Mac user, or you can
even hand them a PC disk with the GEDCOM file on it. All recent (and even
not-so-recent) Macintosh computers can read MS-DOS disks. The latest version
of PAF on the Mac supports the GEDCOM format that 2.3.1 generates (it does not
support the format that PAF 3.0 generates, unless you are careful and specify
the 2.3.1 format during "Export").

yes, this can be accomplished. In fact, I have done it twice in recent
months 2 different ways.
First I made a GEDCOM from my PAF 2.31 pc laptop, and the cousin put it on
his MAC using REUNIONS program. He made a GEDCOM from his REUNIONS program
of his family and I loaded on my PC laptop in PAF 2.31.
More recent a friend had an old MAC with an earlier version of MAC PAF, we
were able to make a GEDCOM (4 times, 4 directories) from the MAC and load it
to her new IBM PC (Win95) ok. No problems found either way.....

I don't believe there is a specific policy stating that there is a term limit
for FHC directors. I know a director who was just released after 30 years
(!). On the other hand, I was just given a new calling after 4.5 years (they
haven't actually called a new director, yet, so I am holding down two jobs).

Assuming it's on a MAC disc, yes, it should. GEDCOM is platform-independent.

Subject: Re: [PAF] off topic: Term limits for FHC directors
No time limit on FHC directors. Most on the average will want to do it
for 5 years, if not longer. We had a change in directors last year, after
the former director wanted less time and wanted to be on occasion a shift
librarian to meet her time schedule.
As for a staff librarian, a minimum of 2 years. I have been a staff
librarian for 5½ years. Most recently, a split in the stake split our
staff between the two libraries, that we choose which one we want to stay
at. I choose the less of the mileage one. One was 12 miles the other was
30 miles.
One other comment, if anyone of you that have an recently old (about 2-4
years) equipment you want to donate (since you have an upgrade equipment)
to the FHC, I'm sure the FHC will take the donation to add to their
center to use for the Family search system.
We started out with one computer, then two (for 4 years). Just last year
someone added a 3rd computer (which all three have just been upgrade to a
pentium series thanks to some kind person who wanted to the search system
to run faster), and just recently one other person added another (from a
doctor office). Another person donated a server to link up 2-3 stations
(yet to setup).
So we have 2 computers that have Family Search complete, one that has
just ancestral file, one has the resource guide (which runs on the
pentium) and one computer that has the preparation to do your genealogy.
That's 5 not counting when the server will be up (to just load the
ancestral file). No all we have to do is get more space.
I would think some of the other equipment will go to a branch location to
get them started with a FHC and more locations.

Has anyone notice on a newer system that has a pentium-based board with
windows 95 running, to serve the FamilySearch program, that when a person
is in IGI, SSDI or MI to mark a page for a holding file get a smaller
screen, and not get the entries in the holding file?
If you do, to those librarians who work in a FHC, e-mail me privately to
find out how to correct it so the the holding file will work again. It
was something very simple to correct and since then had no problems.
Those that are not on windows 95 do not need to worry (everything works).

Recently, we had some patrons who ask if the FS will go on-line. The
answer I got from our director is that dedicated family history centers
**are not** to be hooked up to the internet ( I guess mainly for viruses
and the time cost factors).
Just a tip to pass along to everyone.

Subject: [PAF] GEDCOM File Format
Greetings;
GEDCOM is a file format standard. (It is not a verb, a gerund or a
proper noun) The earlier versions (i.e., used by PAF 2.31 or the
Macintosh version 2.3.1) are ASCII files. The Macintosh can either read
them directly or use the program Apple File Exchange to translate them
into the Macintosh internal format. PAF 2.31 used GEDCOM version 4.x.
PAF 3.0 can generate either version 4.x or GEDCOM version 5.5. One of
the earlier PAF versions also had a dual GEDCOM version capability. It
may have been PAF version 2.0.
The GEDCOM version 5.5 uses the ANSL character set. It is a superset
of ASCII. It is the use of this character set which allows PAF 3.0 to
display diacritics (accent, umlaut (?), tilde, etc - the little marks
above, on or beneath the letters) so that other languages using the roman
alphabet can be more accurately represented.
Another feature of the 5.5 version of the GEDCOM file standard is that
it accommodates source documentation. This source documentation feature
of PAF 3.0 is both a wonderful opportunity and a serious challenge. It
means that for the first time we have a structure built into PAF to let
us adequately describe the sources used for every event. The challenge
comes when you try to use this capability. It is not hard to use, but
the variety of sources used by genealogists is very large (e.g.,
censuses, vital records, land records, family tradition, letters, church
records, ship arrivals, e-mail, Ancestral File, IGI, bibles, SS Death
Index, etc.).
A committee of the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group has been working for
two months now writing a new Documentation Guidelines specifically for
PAF 3.0. After all of this time we are only beginning to understand (we
hope) the complexities of this subject. For example, what do you do when
your source is a letter which quotes or refers to a journal to which you
do not have access? Still, it is for these kinds of problems that God
gave us a brain and the freedom of will to use it. My motto is "If the
Lord wanted a perfect job done, He would not let me help".

I am not sure what you mean? Are you talking about the small blue screen
that moves when you move the highlight bar or about the yellow screen that
gives you the options "view or add to" , print or write to disk????
Is your holding file full ???
Is your maximum entries to holding file set to 999???
We run W95 and FS and i have not heard from anyone having this problem.
Please don't keep these discussions private we all want to learn!!!!!!!

Subject: [PAF] Updated list of temple codes for PAF
For those doing LDS genealogy:
I have just updated the web site that lists the temple codes for entering
ordinance information. Most of the updated information had to do with newly-
announced temples that are not open yet, and so will not affect your actual
data entry. However, since temples are being built faster and faster these
days (especially the new smaller temples), it might be a good idea to keep a
copy of the list for reference purposes.

I've been PAFability (c, Barbara Bennett) to print out a modified

Others involved in the project object to the fact that no dates are shown

Will PAF Companion print a similar report WITH those dates? If not, can
anyone suggest a program that WILL?

Gen-book is a product that will create text genealogies directly from a PAF
database, or even from a Gedcom file. You would need a wordprocessor (such as
Word or Wordperfect) to complete the text genealogy, though. Gen-book has many
capabilities, including the ability to print what you want for the children
whose lines continue. It costs around 50-60 dollars. There is a homepage out
on www.foothill.net/~genbook/ that has a lot more info about it. It will help
you decide if it is what you need and you would be able to order it from there.
Just to let you know, I am not affiliated with the person who sells this
product. I am simply a user of the product (just like PAF). I have used
Gen-book for a few years now and I would definitely recommend it if you want to
produce a text genealogy.
