OK, I dunno what's happening, but this message was from tballard@enid.com
and inquired
"how do I use PAF to research my family ".
When I said reply, include message, this is all that appeared.
In response to the question: you don't. You use PAF to _RECORD_ your
research results. That's pretty much all any genealogy program does,
although one may come with resource discs/CDs, another may have built-in
analysis helpers, or whatever.

PAF is not going to research your family
history. You have to do that, then
record your data on PAF. I suggest that
you try to prove your ancestry to the
Rev. War, and if you can, join the DAR.
You will then be on your way!. List your
names and places on the popular mailing

where in the PAF3 program it creates this extension file.

Subject: PAF: Re: .AF files
I knew it was for Ancestral File but nowhere in the program menu to
access it. I have heard they were trying to get some of the bugs out of
3.0.
I thought it would be for a submission to Ancestral File. I did a short
file to submit and it took as .GED extension. But it did not show the .AF
extension. Maybe this was one of the maintenance versions that took care
of the bug. But still it pops up from time to time. Maybe in some other
aspects of the program. I've tried to do a short file in which it would
do that but I have not pinpoint how it gets the .AF extension yet. I
tried a focus list to save, export a ancestral file submission, importing
a file (even though any extra stuff one program does not meet with PAF3
requirements will put it in a .LST file to view the leftover items).
So if anyone else have any clues where this .AF file begins to create,
Please let us know. Some of regular PAF users love to solve a problem
someone else poised. Even the pros are a bit stumped (as I have
encountered).
Another odd quirk is the .RPT extension file. PAF3 gives an option to
save a copy of what you submit into Ancestral File, but another option
that apparently could not use with the program. I've open up the file
extension .RPT with notepad or wordpad or any word processing program and
view the content as how it would look if you printed out the file. This
is a text file to view, yet you can print it out on the printer as a text
file. one person asked me today about the rpt file and how do you use it.
I told them to open it up with a text file editor or word processing to
see the contents. This may have some future plans for the next upgrade of
the program.

I have noticed that this file was created when I was correcting information in
the Ancestral File and merged two individuals. Evidently, when the GEDCOM
file that is to be sent to the Family History Department is finally created it
uses this file to pick up any merges.
I did look at the .AF file and that is what it appeared to be. I hope
someone else has also seen the same thing.

You don't access the *.af file. It keeps data for use when you make a
submission to Ancestral file. Then the data is used in the submission, which
has a *.ged extension. The *.af file then goes away.

--- stuff removed ---
The Ancestral File Submission has the *.ged extension. The *.af file
temporarly stores data for your Ancestral File submission. If you make a short
test file and don't submit it, the data that is in the *.af file will be lost.
You will also see
that entries for the people in your test file will have a
date in the data field for _last Ancestral File submission_.
If you are going to play around with the *.af file, I would back up all
my data including the *.af file so that I can restore to the point I had before
I started messing with the data.

The *.af file is associated with the *.paf file and keeps information
about changes that relate to changes in the data that you might send to
Ancestral File. You need to keep it with the associated *.paf file for when
you export data to Ancestral
File.
When you make your Ancestral File Submission the *.af file will be
incorporated into the data that you send and the *.af file will vanish.

Subject: PAF: Source question
I have been converting my 2.31 notes into sources, and I'm sort of
glad I'm doing it record by record, because I'm coming across
mistakes I made years ago when I first started recording
documentation in my notes. Fixing them has been no small task, but I
am making some progress and I feel good about that.
The questions I have are:
1. can I print a list of sources that have no rin or mrin attached to
them?
2. can I print a source and all the rin's/mrin's attached to that
source?
3. can I delete a source from my database if it isn't attached to a
rin/mrin?
Many thanks for any help you can give. I love this list, everyone is
so helpful and I'm liking PAF 3.0 more and more because of you.

Subject: Re: PAF: Source question
The following are my observations about answers to the questions. I expect
that I may not understand the entire problem.
In a message dated 98-06-02 17:05:05 EDT, you write:
>
> The questions I have are:
> 1. can I print a list of sources that have no rin or mrin attached to
> them?
I believe that sources do not have RINs or MRINs attached to them. The RIN or
MRIN points to the source, not the source being attached to a RIN or MRIN.
You can print a list of sources from the print menu: from the Small Pedigree
Screen press P, then select Lists and then select Source Lists. You have a
choice of printing the title only or the full source. If you choose the full
source you have a choice of all comments, those marked with !, or none. If
you have many sources you can choose which pages to print.
> 2. can I print a source and all the rin's/mrin's attached to that source?
Not now. That would be a good thing to ask for in a future version, but let's
say those RINs and MRINs that point to or use that source. It would also be
nice to be able to see on the screen which events in an individual's record
have a source or sources.
>
3. can I delete a source from my database if it isn't attached to a
rin/mrin?
You can delete any source from an individual's record by pressing F2 from the
sources screen. You may have to use Page Up or Page Down to get to the source
that ou want to delete. This will not delete the source from any other
record. As far as I can determine, the only way to delete a source is to
merge it into another source with the Match/Merge function.
I hope someone else will have more answers.
