That's what I said (did) and it didn't always work.

I CREATE empty spaces in the left (delete pre-1970) , and hope the date
from the right flows into it. Sometimes it does, other times is does
not. Do I have a bad copy of PAF?

| Subject: PAF: PAF 3.0 match & merge problems
|
| Hi. This is my first post to this group.
|
| I stated a new PAF project today and downloaded extensively from the
| IGI. Then of course, I had to match and merge all the duplicates.
|
| With PAF 2.3 if I had two entries, the left one with pre-1970 and the
| right one with a real date, I could delete the date from the left hand
| entry, and the data from the right hand entry would merge into the empty
| space. This did not always happen when I used 3.0.
|
| Has anyone else experienced this and is there a trick to it now?
|
| I apologize if that has already been discussed. As I said, I've only
| been here a few days.
|
| Sandy ~ http://www.angelfire.com/fl/Sumter/ancestor.html

I've switched sides, leaving the one with the real data on the left and put the
<1970 version on the right. There are of course downsides if there's more
accurate info about the person in the <1970 version.

I've noticed a different problem. Has anybody else had this happen to them?

Using OI, I put an entry into my holding file, and download it to disk.

In PAF, I try to import it, and find that the SOURCE info doesn't get added in
as NOTES, as SOURCE DATA or ANYTHING. I look in the GEDCOM file, and see it
in there, but can't find it anywhere in my database with the name I just
imported.

Ideas? (Other than having to type it in manually, or cut/paste it? This used
to be automatic!)

Perhaps not. You don't say if the problem is only with the Sealed to Parents
field. If that is the problem, then I understand there is a known problem in
PAF 3.0 relating to the S-P field.
One way to work around this is to use the edit feature to enter the date you
want. Edit before you merge. The screen will display what was in the screen
on the right and you can type it in.
But please let The Family History Support Line know the problem (perhaps
an e-mail would be best (fhdfhsup@chq.byu.edu). The more documented problems
they have the quicker we may get an upgrade with solved problems.

This is a known problem with the programmers and they are working on a
fix or to correct the problem. Also, you are only about to merge one
record into another, if you have several records of the same person.
Just exit the match/merge as a work around to both. Then reenter and
make the merge. DO NO EDITING WHILE IN MATCH/MERGE.

Mary: That is called a "work around" and it is necessary because the
software is broken and that is the way to make it do what you want
without corrupting your data or some other equally bad thing. All
software has bugs and until they are repaired bright people come up with
a work around so you can do what you want to with the software even
though it is not documented by the software author. John Totten

Yes, John, both Mary-Lou and I understand bad programs and workarounds.

The puzzle still remains:

1) WHY would one leave match/merge to do a merge
2) HOW would one pull that off, please?
3) WHAT happens when you EDIT the "merge to" record and then merge to
it? I do that quite frequently without problems.

In my case, I delete something on the right, expecting something to
merge in from the left. I guess this is what has been referred to as
editing. What USUALLY happens is that the space remains empty, and I
loose all data in that field. And yes, I guess it usually happened in
the SP field.

Thanks, Sandy.

I'm getting the feeling we're on two different, but parallel tracks. I
thought the manual said, clearly, that the ordinances fields cannot be
edited.

If it wasn't in the manual, it was in some of the immediate-post-release
PR. They are deliberately disabled to prevent LDSers from accidentally
deleting information they don't want to delete. I distinctly remember a
man who uses those fields to record the dates of his changes complaining
bitterly about it.

If you really *MUST* edit those fields, do it via GEDCOM.

This probably sounds paternalistic or "bad coding", but you'd be amazed
how many people use the program for their religious work without
understanding what the heck they're doing, or why they're doing it.
Since the primary reason for the church to write and support the program
is the convenience of their members, anything that helps them is by
definition in the programming department good. (And for Temple-Ready
purposes, pre-1970 is as good a date as 13 Apr 1967, anyway.)

(For the record, no, I'm not LDS.)

Subject: Re: PAF: PAF 3.0 match & merge problems

Merging always goes from the right screen to the left screen. The fields on
the right will not merge with the fields on the left if there is anything in
the left field.

Ordinance date fields definitely can be changed. They may need to be changed
to "Submitted" and then to a date. The field that can't be changed is the
Ancestral File Number field. The reason for that is because corrections to
the Ancestral File from my computer if I have previously downloaded data from
the Ancestral File and then made corrections. The theory is that if I had a
chance to change to the Ancestral File Number I might do it and the
corrections would then go to the record of the wrong person.

What I was trying to suggest about editing the data in the left screen,
especially for the sealing-to-parents field, was to delete any information
that was already in the screen if it isn't wanted, and then by observing what
the program said was in the "merge from" screen, type that in the "merge to"
screen. I don't believe that this will lose any data, it is already copied
from the "merge from" screen and that data will be lost if you merge anyway.
I agree that the Match/Merge screens are not the place to do general editing
of a record, but it is a way to get information from the "merge from" screen.
Sometimes you want to do this because the "merge to" screen has only a partial
date and the "merge from" screen has the full date. The missing part will not
be merged, because something is already in that field. Using the edit
function allows you to add what was missing before you merge and the data is
gone.

If this isn't clear, send me a message and I'll try again.
Mary Lou

As you may or may not know. The paf mailing list's address is used alot on
USENET newsgroups and also there are programs which scan web pages for
mail addresses so that they can use them to send out what we call SPAM or
unwanted mail. I try to block these messages but sometimes it doesn't
work as you can see from this case.

If I get one more case of SPAM to the list I will set up a approved
posting file so that ONLY members of the list can post to it. This will
solve the problem for good instead of me trying to filter out the
thousands of spammers out there.

I have to disagree. This is the prefect place to do editing.

>Sometimes you want to do this because the "merge to"

In my case it "always".

People give me filled in paper family group records to type into PAF and
then run a Temple Ready. When I start a project, I run all the parents
through the IGI and save them to disk. Then I gedcom the saved data
into PAF and follow the paper sheets to get them all tied in.

While collecting people in the IGI, I often purposely add one person
more than once when the "duplicate" records contain different or
additional data. Then in PAF I have to edit and merge this duplicate
information. This worked well with PAF 2.31.

I asked Kent Crowther, our patriarch, an avid genealogist and a temple
sealer how he dealt with ordinance dates. He said he went with the
earliest date. I said I did, too. It
feels good to see those early dates and feel that perhaps that ancestor
doesn't feel neglected.

Technically, "Bef 1970" is as good as 19 Dec 1919, but it doesn't look
that great on a printout that lines up 12 spaces. Identical or similar
dates within a family also indicate a confirmation.

It was my personal goal, a year after my mother died, to have the dates
of the ordinances all on the same day. And I did it. To me, when I see
all the dates the same, it tell me that somebody really cared. The
identical dates will be everlasting testimony to my love for my
mother. The date also would have been the one-year anniversary of her
death, but she died on Dec 23 and the next year the temple was closed
until after the New Year. My personal sealing date is also the
anniversary date of my original marriage.

So much for dates.

I do not like the reasons this merge-edit option was eliminated or
disabled. For me it is a very important option.
