Subject: PAF: PAF 3.0 & HP 722 & other Windows Only Printers

I talked with Dan today, 4 May 1998, at FamilySearch and PAF Support. I
wanted to know what all printers had problems working with PAF 3.0. He told
me which, and also gave me a work around for the HP 722. He said he has had
good luck getting the 722 to work this way even though others were having
problems.
I have not tried it on the 722 because it was a consultant that was having
the problem and they decided to take it back anyway because they were
afraid it wouldn't work with their other DOS programs.
Following are my notes I took from my conversation with him. Pardon me if
you all already know all this, or have tried it and it still doesn't work.
I would like to know if it helps or not, especially with the 722, as I know
someone else with one who may be switching to PAF 3.0 soon.
				***
Printers which have problems with PAF 3.0
Any Printer which is a windows only printer (ask the salesman, tech
support etc. at the store you buy or bought the printer at)
	Some of the ones with known problems;
HP 722, HP 820, Epson Stylus 400, All in One Styles - Canon Multi, HP
Office Jet

Work arounds for HP 722
		Choice A:
	In PAF Printing Preferences Select the following;
Printer 1: DeskJet
Printer 2: DeskJet (Yes, make sure you chose the same printer - Deskjet -
for both printers
Paper-feed type Dan said "Continuous-Single Sheet" and that you "have to
read it carefully"?. I would think "S" for Single, but wasn't clear about
what he was saying.
Printed Lines - Dashed
(Now, the only thing I changed with my HP 890C was to choose DeskJet for
both printers instead of LazerJet II)

In Windows 95 Printer Properties under "My Computer" and "Printers"
Right Click on Printer Name
go to Properties
Spool MS-Dos Print Jobs - make sure it is checked
Check Port State before Printing - Make sure it is checked
Port State - yes check
Spool Print Jobs so program finishes printing faster
Spool Data Format - EMF

Back in PAF 3.0. When you now try to print charts, you will be kicked
out of the program and PAF will now show up on the task bar. Click on it
there - DO NOT open PAF up again with an icon or from the program menu -
and PAF will restart the printing job.

All I know is this is what Dan said. I don't know him, I just asked him
his name, and he said people with these problems could ask for him.

	Choice B:
Work Around to Print Pedigree and Family Group Sheets - for nice looking
charts - Use PAF Companion

	Choice C:
Another Work Around for Windows Only Printers - to Print Lists especially
	In PAF 3.0
U - Focus
L - Select all
P - Print
Change Print Destination
Save to Disk File
Name of File - give name such as "SamList" (no quotes - 8 letters or less)
Drive/Directory - give name where your word processor files normally are
stored, such as "WPFile" (no quotes)
F1 - Continue
Choose What type of report to print
Choose Options
F1 - Continue
Esc and Exit PAF
Go into Word Processor, Call up File, Adjust Margins if needed. Print

For Epson Stylus 400
Another Staff Member couldn't get this one to work. She found a paper
which mentioned HP LazerJet II series and chose the HP LazerJet II in PAF
Printer Preferences and now it works for her.

For HP 890C
Choose HP LazerJet II or choose DeskJet for Both Printers. I did this and
got mine to work with the DeskJet setting where before I had to choose
LazerJet II.

Good Luck to Everyone with Printer Woes
